We left Pisa and traveled to Lucca which is the only city in Italy whose walls are 100% intact. It is a quaint little Italian town with a fairly even mix of Medieval, Renaissance and Later Buildings, but the walls are definitely the main attraction! The city has paved and planted grass and trees along the top of the wall for pedestrian use. The first thing we did was rent bikes and we pedalled all the way around the entire city! It was the perfect vantage point because you could look out across the suburbs and the countryside, but you could also look down on the entire city within the walls! It was a wonderful way to view the entire area.
My favorite part was how much fun biking like that was! I have a bike in Florence, but I spend most of my time trying not to get killed! between all the vehicles and vespa's, biking in Florence is not fun it is just a means of transportation. Here in Lucca, however, was an opportunity to reconnect with my innerchild! Kathryn and I zoomed around with "no hands" and "no feet" and of course we sang "Doe a Deer" from the Song of Music. We belted it out at the top of our lungs! I think normally the locals would be anti-tourist; lots of people walk their dogs or go jogging up on top of the wall. But that day, everyone smiled and laughed at us because our joy was to tangible and contagious.
Despite how much I enjoyed my bikeride, I definitely had to pull over about half way around the city. No, I was not worn out. Biking in Florence and climbing a million stairs everyday have gotten me in pretty good shape. And no, i did not crash, nor did I fall off (plenty of other kids did though! heheee). I pulled over because of a beautiful black lab. I miss my sasha-dog so much that I feel the need to bet every lab I see! This lab was named Rocky, and apparently he tends to be a little stand-offish but for whatever reason he loved me (unfortunately he liked me a bit too much; he got excited and I hopped on my bike in a real hurry so I wouldn't get humped).
After our jaunt around the city, we took a short walking tour and then headed back to Firenze, happy and exhausted.
