I've been in Bangkok for almost a week now and today is my last full day here before heading off to the south islands for some rest and relaxation away from the chaos of Koh San Road. Life is never boring in Bangkok as there's always markets on or temples to see or hangovers to recover from. I probably could have seen a few more temples but spending every night out in town has taken its tool slightly. But that shouldn't take away from how much I've loved Bangkok and I can honestly say that I will be back and next time I'm going to bring an extra empty suitcase for the markets, as yesterday in the weekend market I could quite happily have bought an entire wardrobe but had to limit myself to just a shirt and a t-shirt grand total of 1000Bt (20quid).
As for the food it has been everything that i could've hoped for and a little bit more. I think the lady on my road with roasted duck rice and pak choi is the best I've had, but a spicy papaya salad in the market yesterday came close and Padthai with chicken and egg never fails to impress. I did feel like a little bit of a heathen when I had a sandwich for lunch yesterday. I also managed to bump into George Spearing from Bryanston, which was very strange but not totally surprising following the amount of backpackers in Koh San road.
Today is my last day and so the plan is to hire a tuk-tuk for a day and ask the driver to take us around the city. The idea of buying one and driving it back to England is still very tempting and might have to look into that for next trip! Cost wise they cost about 5000Bt (about 100quid). So last day before heading to the beach paradises of the south and I genuinely can't wait. Bangkok is a lot of fun and I'm glad I've given myself enough time here but I'm ready for a change now. Transport has probably been one of my favourite things about bangkok (after the food) and although tuk-tuks were my favourite method, they have now been completely replaced by motorbike taxis. I'm definitely going to hire one on Koh Samui and Koh Phanangan to explore the islands.
Bangkok has been awesome and I have a feeling that the islands will be better and maybe a tad more relaxing.
