Sa-Wat-Dee Ka from Thailand! Hello!
I am typing up this blog form the veranda of our small bungalow on Ko Phi Phi on a beautiful sunny morning. From our bungalow I can see the longboats heading in and out of the bay and smile at the locals as they ride their bikes into the main part of the town to open up their shops for the day.
Our journey here was a relatively smooth and pleasant experience. Funny enough the most stress we had was in the Vancouver airport! Our flight was delayed over 2 hours which sucked because of course with my Virgo tendencies we were already an hour and a half early. Then while at the gate waiting for our flight the boarding guy informed us that Geoffrey may not get on the flight due to his standby status. It turns out there were still seats available but that the plane may be overweight already in cargo. Our options were a.) get my bags off the flight ASAP and we try again the next day together (which made me cry) or b.) Geoff doesn’t make it on and I do the whole journey by myself and he
tries to catch up to me somewhere in Thailand (which made me cry even more) or c.) take our chances and Geoff is the 2nd to last person allowed on the flight and we travel together as planned (which made me stop crying and smile). We took our chances and went with c.
Highlights of that flight were that a lovely Chinese man was nice enough to switch seats with Geoffrey so that we could sit beside each other for the 9 hour flight. Our 2 relatively tasty meals were included in the price of our ticket which we weren’t expecting. Free booze! And Geoff slept.
Lowlights were of course the delay:
• Mean boarding Agent toying with my fragile traveling emotions.
• Horrible red wine (which we drank anyways).
• Megan getting no sleep.
We landed in Narita Airport in Tokyo Japan on what I thought was Sunday morning but was actually Monday morning because we gained a day in the air. I am still confused about the whole International Date Line thing. They are so efficient in Japan that everything went smoothly. The temperature was 2 Celsius. And I fell in love with the Japanese
bathrooms. Is everyone in Japan a Virgo?
We both slept most of the Tokyo to Kuala Lampur flight as it was a red eye. We also experienced the worst airline food ever! Do not eat on Air Asia flights.
When we arrived at 6:30am in KL it was 25 Celsius! Yes! Finally we are feeling some heat. We spent the majority of our 6 & ½ hour lay over in a “sports bar” in the KL airport drinking way to expensive beer and eating the worst attempt at pub food I have ever had.
By the time we arrived in Krabi Thailand it was 28 Celsius and humid and I was so under slept that everything was overwhelming to me. Krabi is a loud, busy and dirty port town and I was grateful to get to our guesthouse and shower. After a short venture out for dinner and a couple bags of chips (woo hoo chips!) we went back to our $16 a night room and were fast asleep by 5pm! We slept a glorious 13 hours in our cool air conditioned room and got up early to catch our 9am ferry to Phi Phi. Our hot
and sticky ferry ride cost us $15 for the 2 of us and gave us our first real look at the Thailand we came for.
We have been on Phi Phi for 3 days now and it is lovely. It is quite busy and a bit expensive by Thai standards but we are enjoying ourselves. We have done a bit of shopping which is pretty hit and miss for me as I am a bit more-well endowed than most women let alone Asian women! The beaches are beautiful and the water is like a warm bath, which is surprisingly refreshing. The beers are only 50 baht ($1.62) for a large bottle and are bought at any of the many pharmacies in town. Gives a whole new meaning to “Meggie needs her medicine”! Hee heee heeee.
One thing that has surprised me the most about Phi Phi is that there are cats EVERYWHERE! No one told me about the cats! Some are taken care of by the vendors and the restaurants but most are just strays. We have a small female that has been hanging around our bungalow that is so pregnant she looks like she is going to
pop any minute now. Breaks my heart seeing all these kitties and makes me think about my Sweetpea at home.
We will be leaving here tomorrow and heading to Ko Lanta, which is a bit more relaxed and less touristy island. Can’t wait! I hope the beer is even cheaper!
Lah Gorn Ka for now! That means goodbye. We are so multilingual now!
