Newport!
Newport in April, even though it was clouding over and a storm was coming, it was still gorgeous. Ok so it's the 28th of April to day and I’m sitting in an internet place in Toronto, but I’ve been a bit slack on my travel blog entries so I’ll update you. I have photo's but I don't have my camera cable with me right now so you'll just have to wait a bit for those! Dartmouth is the cutest town ever. Those who actually live there, excuse me if my geography isn't quite right, but best to my knowledge it's about 45 min to an hours drive south of Boston on the coast. It's actually a reasonably sized town (if memory serves it's 2nd biggest geographically and 5th biggest population was is Massachusetts, i think that's right it could be the other way around).
Anyway it's really lovely, and mean it's a beach town because it's on the cost, but i mean the place is covered in snow half the year so it's not a 'beach town' per say the way an Australian might think of it. A lot of people own boats. There's a couple of famous people that live there as well.
So I got there on Friday and got a bit of a tour and shown
More mansions
So, there is a scenic drive you can take, and the first part is just a regular road lined with the sepctacular house, and then you continue and later it opens out and you can see more of them across the water. I personally think the drive should be renamed "the newport scenic makes-you-feel-more-than-a-little-disappointed-in-your-humble-abode-drive" the beach. That night we went out (just to a house party) and it was a bit of a reunion for a lot of people coming home from college for Easter weekend. I met a lot of pretty nice people. Unfortunately i was pretty sick so I spent most of the night shivering with a fever and trying to ignore my pounding head and throat.
Newport, Rohde island. It's another beach town on (in?) Rohde Island, and from what I could gather a pretty popular tourist town, mainly because of these almighty mansions. They were HUGE! Some of them where museums (which I feel speaks for itself), but a lot of them people still actually live on and are worth more than I’ll probably make in 3 life times. I took some photo's of them, which I’ll stick up when i can. We drove back to Dartmouth through a pretty spectacular light storm. Saturday night was a family dinner. Did you know, that people actually decorate their houses for Easter? They have Easter trees (so trees with eggs on them) and stuffed rabbits, and all these crazy Christmas-style-but-Easter decorations. It was the cutest thing I’ve ever seen. Hot cross
Mansion by the beach
It was windy, and that's my camera strap. But you still get the gist of it buns didn't make much of an appearance though, I was shattered. So yeah, Easters a bit of a bigger deal than in Australia. Most people go to church, fortunately (and those who know me will understand my relief) it wasn't really expected that I go. After the dinner was another house party, I was still pretty sick so i played miss anti-social and retreated pretty quick to go home and sleep.
Sunday was church for some and sleep in for me. I got a bit more of a tour of the town, and saw another mansion which has quite a bit of history to it, but is now apartments which will set you back about a million a year. I know what you're thinking, why not buy a house? I have a photo of the place. It's on a cliff with amazing views and the place is massive and stunning. If I could, I’d pay it too.
Sunday night I saw the most ridiculous and amusing movie/extended video clip I have ever seen. The entertainment lay not in the movies credible ability to be humorous, but rather with the ridiculous and entirely unjustified seriousness it took itself with. It was
And the other side
The first one with the camera strap was one side of the inlet and this is the other. meant to be a drama. I don't remember the name but I’ll find out because you have to watch it. something like "stuck in the closet". It's all in song. In rnb (which I feel, at least a little, speaks for itself). And goes for about 50 minutes. The plot includes affairs with homosexual lovers, guns and one asthmatic midget (no, really).
All in all it was a pretty good weekend(even though I was sick with what I think was a bad case of the flu). The two families that I met, Laura’s and Danny's, where absolutely delightful. Really really lovely people who where delightfully hospitable in spite of the reasonably random nature of my presence! Tribute to the fact that not all Americans are rude and arrogant (contrary to popular belief). I even got an Easter basket, which was very sweet.
So that was Dartmouth and Newport.
