Took a seven hour ferry from Santorini to Sifnos, with a few stops at other islands along the way - now we can say we have visited 5 Greek islands! Sifnos may be my favorite part of this vacation - the island had a very sleepy Greek, non-touristy feel to it. Our hotel is very cute, on a top of a hill overlooking the capital village of Appolonia, and lots of cats hanging around (I know that the people at the hotel are sneaking them food). Thursday night we walked down to the town square for dinner - 180 steps downhill (dad counted), and stopped at the Beautiful Sifnos Tavern (seriously), the food here is the best yet. Caper salad, tzaziki, stuffed squid, and grilled eggplant and onions in tomato sauce - I think dad wants to sleep there! Rented a car to tour the island, only a couple of driveable roads with a lot of footpaths. The island is pretty hilly, and there are hundreds of miles of rock wall to terrace the hills for farming. I think we got a really good picture of what true Greek island life is like here - from the roosters waking us up every day to the sheep herders and goat farmers along the road, going about their day to day business. There are a couple of beautiful beach villages, with apartments and tavernas right on the beach. I think I could manage living here for a few months out of the year. Back to Athens Sunday night, then back to reality and the end of a wonderful vacation!!
