St. Lucia / iSimangaliso Wetlands

St. Lucia is a small town on a wetland estuary on the coast of the Indian Ocean.

We stayed at a lodge for 3 nights surrounded by a tropical jungle environment. We didn't dare leave our door open too long or we could have some unwelcome visitors in our room.....lizards, insects, monkeys etc. It was actually a great place!

The mosquitoes here are very quiet and small and they don't buzz around but while I was sitting outside posting my blog I must have been bitten many times because when I got up in the morning my legs were covered with bites.

We went on a boat trip on the nearby river which runs into the ocean. We saw several hippos and a few crocodiles and many different birds such as cranes, storks, herons and fish eagles. Afterwards, we went on a hiking trail through some jungle terrain. We took a wrong turn and ended up out into a clearing and saw a sign saying “Warning! Hippo and Crocodile frequent this area." So, needless to say, we went back to a different part of the trail.

We also drove through iSimangaliso Wetland Park to Cape Vidal. Cape Vidal has the most beautiful beaches I’ve seen! They are quite remote this time of year. The waves were high.

Also while driving through the park we encountered Bushbok, Kudu, Vervet Monkeys, Zebra, Cape buffalo, hippos, black rhino etc. The Crocs are very difficult to see here this time of year because it so hot and they stay under the water for most of the day.

The next place we visit will be the Southern of Africa. Will be continued....
