Can you believe this is our 24th Blog, we have uploaded more than 750 photos and a few videos, and we are only onto our 47th day of our trip!?!!?! Crazy fun!! 😊 So, we are up to San Diego, home of the the Zoo and Sea World, both places we visited plus a few others, here goes....
Day 47, November the 18th, 2010, we woke up to another morning of fog in Los Angeles (Anaheim), ready to hit the road south to San Diego. It was about an hour and a half drive down the coast, and it was beautiful. We pasted some amazing houses, beautiful coastline and finally arrived at Sea World San Diego. We got there at about 11am, and then left at 5pm, as the gates were closing, enjoying all the shows and attractions possible in that time!! Included in that were two outstanding shows, Believe - The Shamu Story, and Blue Horizons. Believe is a show involving the HUGE killer whales they have on display at Sea World, with lots and lots of water being splashed everywhere (not over us thankfully), some great displays of power by the animals and a few laughs too!! They are
amazing, with the biggest weighing in at over 8000 pounds and they are still able shoot themselves out of the water, nearly their whole body coming out!! It was great to see, and one of the main reasons Jess came to Sea World.
The other great show we saw called Blue Horizons, and this was a dolphin acrobatic show with a difference. As always, there was a story, but the show actually had human acrobatics, a few birds (Macaws and Vultures) and Pilot Whales. The only place in the world with Pilot Whales in a show, and they were cool!! A lot of water again got thrown out of their pools onto people (not us again!! 😊 ). We also saw a comedy show involving the sea lions and people doing re-inactments of tv shows like SLCI (Sea Lion Crime Investigation), Sea Lion Idol, Sea Lion Survivor, Sea Lion So You Think You Can Dance and an ad for Coke. It was very funny and entertaining. Along with the shows, we also visited plenty of animals, including polar bears, reef aquariums, sharks, walruses, beluga whales (white artic whales), penguins, dolphins, puffins (it can walk on water!!), manta rays, otters and
of course, the killer whales. It was an extremely enjoyable day, loads of fun, and we were exhausted by the time we checked-in to our hotel, so it was off to the heated spa for a relax before deciding what to do for dinner!!
Dinner was harder than we thought. Mischa found a nice restuarant online that seemed to be just around the corner, so we drove off looking for that. 15mins later, it was not where we thought, so we decided to use the GPS to find Sizzler. Easy enough, but unbeknownst to the GPS, it had actually shut down, so we decided to find somewhere else. Driving around, just following where the road would take us, we eventually ended up at Fat City Steakhouse, somewhere near the airport?!?! It was quite fun, and the food was fantastic!! Best meal Jess had had on the trip so far!! It was heaps as well, so we packaged up Jess' leftovers and Mischa's dessert and headed back to our hotel (using the GPS this time!!) and went off to bed!! DAY 47 - DONE!!
Thursday, we got up early as the zoo opened at 9am. We only had a 10 min
drive but we needed to find breakfast beforehand. We got in the car and the fuel light came on! So we used the GPS to find the nearest fuel station. Again, unfortunately, the closest one it found was non-existent, so we tried the the next closest but made a wrong turn on the way and ended up driving for an extra 10 mins (lucky the light is a warning and does not actually mean no fuel!). After that we were on our way to the zoo, almost there and realised we needed brekky. We spotted a Maccas, the first in two days which is very unusual for the states.... took us a few mins to try and figure our how to get there, doing blockies and still ending up on the wrong side of the road!! We finally made it to the ZOO. Fantastic day, if you ever get the chance! Would probably recommend a weekend though as that's when most of the shows and keeper talks are, but during the week there is not as many people so it worked for us. Firstly we caught a guided bus tour (for 35 min) which covers about 70% of the zoo
and being early in the morning a lot of the animals were up and about and we had great views from the top deck of the bus! Throughout the day we spotted tigers, monkeys (lots and lots), hippos, deer (and lots of other deer like animals), polar bears, giraffes, rhinos, camels, elephants, flamingoes, gorillas, pigmy hippos, meercats, lions, jaguars, bears, snakes, birds and many more.... it was heaps of fun.... we finished up around 4:30pm and decided to check out Mission Bay / Belmont Park Amusement Park. After a nice, but cold, stroll along the beach, we hit the Amusement Park for some Mirror Mazes, Laser Maze, Lazer Evader, Black Light Mini Golf and some Arcade Games. We had heaps of fun, a bit of competition and won some lollies, and then headed out to find another Sizzler for dinner!! We plugged it in in the GPS, and loh and behold, it took us to the same spot as the previous night!! So, we plugged in another one, and on the way, saw an Outback Steakhouse off the freeway, so headed off to find that. Mischa again took a wrong exit, got onto another freeway, and by the time we
got off that one, were a while away from where we wanted to be, so lovely GPS came back out to take us back!! 😊 Again, dinner was great, and then a quick visit to Target to grab some thermals before we head to New York, before heading back to the room to get some sleep!!
Now, we are checked-out, and are writing this blog at the airport, so we are as up to date as we can get!! Enjoy!! 😊
(EDIT: Didn't finish it in the airport, so am now quickly loading it on someone else's internet in NYC!!)
