Wednesday 13th October:
Hi guys. Sorry for the delay in updating. I know that you are all hanging on every last word!!
After our last entry from the Great Barrier Reef, we hopped in Bertha for the last time and took a leisurely drive back along the coast. We stopped briefly at Trinity Beach, which looks gorgeous, before heading on to Cairns. We sadly dropped off faithful old Bertha who had been home for the last 8 days, booked into our hotel and went exploring. Cairns is beautiful, with a free outdoor infinity pool/lagoon on the Esplanade, looking right out to sea.
We went out for surf and turf (yum - even better because it wasn't pot noodle prepared in the back of a camper van) and met a lovely waitress from Ormskirk (Kay) who gave us loads of tips for places to visit on our forthcoming trip to New Zealand. We then went for an explore of the Cairns night markets to buy pressies for the nippers (apparently the last T-shirts we sent them were "only suitable for 10 year old girls" quoted Connor, so we must try harder this time.
Thursday 14th October: It was
pouring...and I mean pouring...with rain today, so we did laundry, took a siesta and went out for a cheapy chinese in the market square. Han had an early night, but party animal Dario was still up for a bit of action, so he headed out to drink alone. Dave spent a few hours sitting alone in a bar called Vibe - they offered 2 for 1 drinks, so he was learning that drinking alone has some benefits. On subsequently re-visiting Vibe the following evening, to listen to Erasure and the YMCA and to witness lots of mincing and dramatic dancing, it suddenly dawned on Dave that he had spent the previous evening sitting alone in a gay bar (luckily he hadn't been wearing his pink T-shirt!). I secretly think he was gutted he didn't get chatted up.
Friday 15th October: The weather is really changeable in Cairns and the rain cleared for a really hot day. We spent the day relaxing and sunbathing by the lagoon (burnt my bum a bit). Decided to have a big night out as it was our last night in Australia. Unfortunately, Cairns in the evening seems to be full of macho idiots and
we had to take a reprieve in the gay bar to stop Dave getting into a fight.
Saturday 16th October: After breakfast and a bit of people watching at the lagoon, we decided to head to the airport early to grab a coffee, maybe use the internet, etc. Little did we know that Cairns is the ONLY International airport that closes in between flights, and ours was the only flight of the night, so there were no facilities to occupy the 7 hour wait. That being said, the airport staff decided to practice their act for a forthcoming charity event, so we got to pose as a guinea-pig audience while they strutted up and down.
In summary, we have really enjoyed Australia and its landscape, but to quote Dave " Aussies are like cars...they sometimes look nice, but growl a lot and ultimately there's not a lot under the hood".
