Temple in Chiang Mai
Praying to Buddha for good fortune Chiang Mai, Thailand - October 16, 2010
Our residence in Chiang Mai is the Dusit D2 Hotel right downtown and on Chang Klan road where every night they have a night bazaar. The stalls begin to show around 3 pm, and the peddlers show-up around 6pm and set out their wares, by 7pm the action has started and continues to midnight. When you venture forth in the morning all of the stalls are gone only to re-appear the next day. Mare did some bargaining but the king of bargaining has to be Carl who not only haggled a peddler down from 1,600tb down to 500tb for a knockoff watch and then followed this up by getting a drugstore to drop the price of some bandages by 100tb.
I had heard that the King of Thailand was a revered person; I can believe this since one sees his image also everywhere. The other thing that you frequently see are small “Spirit Houses”. The Buddhists believe in both multiple gods and that the spirits of ancestors will protect them so they have these small spirit Houses for the gods and the ancestors to dwell in.

Pink Plane
This is a plane our grand daughter would love Guild puts on a number of shows, both to entertain us and for us to be exposed to some of the local talent and native dances. Our first night here we had a special dinner with traditional food and a series of native dances performed by one of the Hill Tribes. Last night it was authentic northern Thai cuisine while being entertained by traditional dancers. Tonight it is another Thai dinner with Folksong music. I cannot comment on tonight’s entertainment but of the 2 styles of dance I prefer the traditional over the Hill tribe.
Yesterday we started the day off with a visit to the Wat Prathad Doi Suthep, Chiang Mai’s most scared temple. (I have never seeing so much gold leaf and will let the pictures confirm this.) Our next stop was a Hot Spring in the nearby mountains. While I enjoyed the hot spring Mare and a number of the other travelers enjoyed a message. The cost of a 45 minute foot and leg message followed by a shoulder and head message was 200tb or approximately $7 dollars. While at the Hot Spring we learned how fast and heavy the downpour can be from a storm
Temple in Chiang Mai
Going down the stairs from the Temple here. Today our first stop was an elephant park. Traditionally elephants were trained for work such as dragging and stacking lumber and carrying people on their back in the jungle. These elephants do this but also have been trained to play a form of soccer, dance, sink basket balls, challenge a person to a game of darts and most amazing paint very good pictures. Mare and I plus most of our fellow passengers took a half hour ride through the jungle on an elephants back.
