My new uniform. I have to wear some version of this everyday to training. Minus the hat though.
First full week in Sacramento!  It's definitely been an exciting one.  I might have said earlier that I will be in CTI (corps training institute) until early November, so these next few weeks will be primarily training.  And with what I've learned about AmeriCorps so far Im not expecting to learn where or what my project will be until right before it starts!

Our campus is very nice, it's still so weird to see palm trees everywhere!  I'm not directly in the city of Sacramento- our base is McClellan park which used to be an air force base.  It's nice because it's kind of our own area but there are a couple of stores and shops within walking distance.

I've filled out lots of forms and become certified by the red cross in about 4 different areas.  CPR, AED, first aid, and disaster relief.

The part of training Id been most worried about was the physical training and Tuesday morning we took our baseline test.  We had to record how many sit ups and push ups we could do in two minutes and then run a mile and a half.  We record our scores now, halfway through the

program and then again at the end to measure improvement.  So we all lined up at 5:30, it was still so dark that we could see stars!
It actually wasn't as bad as I thought it would be!  I finished about the middle of the group during the run which I was happy about.  I was having lots of flashbacks to the horrifying PE days of elementary school...

We have orientation groups called "PODs" that we go to training with, eat meals with, and mostly live with.  My roommate and the two girls next door are all in my pod.  This won't be my team throughout the year.  Teams aren't decided for a while because some people apply to be on specific firefighting teams so they cant divide us up until they know who these teams are.

I've been a little bit nervous about how the transition into new teams will be now that everyone has gotten attached to and bonded with their pods.  Instead of being excited about meeting their new teams Im worried that everyone will be too focused on missing their pod and less interested in making new friends as they were when we first

got here.  I've definitely gotten to know and enjoy my group and become friends with the girls I live with so it's sad to think I won't be spending this year with them.

Right On!!
Kristen, All of the concerns you have are so normal, so "right on" I would say in the language of generations ago. You are thinking about relationships more than anything else and that is terrific. I am glad to hear that you are doing so well. You know how proud I am to know you and to be included in your blogs. Even the hat, (which is quite fetching) and the uniform cannot hide the smile. I keep you in my prayers and know that you are part of the community of hope that we all have for the future. God bless you.
