There is a lot of history in Rhodes and during my time there I didn't see any of it, I was 19 when I went to Rhodes and I saw one part, the bars and clubs of Faliraki.
We stayed with a tour operator called Club 18-30 who specialise in clubbing holidays for that age group, shortly after we had booked to go to Faliraki a TV programme started called Club Reps, it was basically about the night life in Faliraki and the reps that worked for Club 18-30. All of my friends and myself watched it and could not wait to go, we were all single and thought it would be great to go somewhere full of alcohol, late night clubs, sun, sea & of course lots of siestas ;-)
But it would appear that every other male in the UK saw the TV show and thought the same thing and that resulted in a resort where the men out number the women about 8-1, we all still had an amazing time and whilst there I even got to bungee jump near the coast.
I didn’t really think about how to jump when doing the bungee jump, I
wish I had fallen rather than jump as instead of bouncing up and down as a normal bungee jump does I jumped out which resulted in me bouncing in a sort of diagonal direction. My friends decided to watch and sunbathe around the pool as I did my jump, around the pool were huge boulders, my friends were laying right next to one of them, as I jumped my upper body dipped into the water and as I bounced and began to come back down again I was heading straight for that very boulder. My screams of enjoyment turned into silence and me hoping that the cord was not long enough to reach the boulder, it wasn’t but as my friends were all sat next to that boulder they all saw my face as I headed towards it and all of them laughed ALOT!
I also got to Skysurf, which is basically where you are laying horizontally in what I would describe as a sleeping bag, you are slowly lifted up backwards until you reach the top, the cord you are connected to is fixed to a pivot point and once at the top you release a catch and
swing, like a pendulum backwards and forwards. I’m not sure how high the top was but it was very high, when you get to the top you have to release the cord yourself in order to go, my friend peter and I did the Skysurf three times in total whilst there and every time I had to pull the cord, after you pull the cord you initially drop straight down until you feel tension on the cord and you swing, that initial drop is the scariest part.
Every night was a party/bar crawl/foam party and all involved drinking games of some sort, being a small fishing village when it’s not a partying mecca Faliraki is known for its alcoholic fish bowls, there are different sizes and different flavours and whilst there we tried a few. They are fantastic to get drunk however when you have been there for a week or so and you have had no healthy food and hardly slept people start to get ill and if you share a fish bowl that means everyone else is going to get ill too because of all of the back wash in the bowl and that is just what
happened to us, my friend Peter got so ill he lost his voice.
Club 18-30 is known for taking you to the best clubs and wildest parties not for the quality of its hotels, our hotel was no exception, we asked for a pool or sea view and got a view of a dirty back alley, luckily we didn’t get the pool view room because we got back to the hotel about 6am everyday and at around 10am the music started around the pool and then it would be impossible to sleep. The Greek sewage system has not been updated everywhere in Greece yet, our hotel was one that had not been updated which meant that you need to put toilet paper into a separate bin and NOT the toilet, I shared a room with my friend Mark who always forgot to put the toilet paper into the bin this resulted in our toilet being blocked for almost the whole of the second week of our holiday and being a small room as you can imagine our room did not smell good.
Most of our friends used our room as a meeting place to drink before going out
as we could see a lot of the other rooms and could watch people going to the pool, seven of us went to Faliraki and everyone would come with drinks and snacks into our room. One of my friends forgot to mention however that she had half eaten a watermelon and left the rest under my bed, we found it when it started to leak after it had turned mouldy, it smelt pretty bad but we couldn’t really smell it as Mark had blocked the toilet and that smell was worse.
At the start of the second week my friend Freddy joined us, he had booked a hotel up in the mountains away from all of the clubs, one day my friend Sonny and I went to Freddy’s hotel, when we got there we laid down in his room and turned the music on, the next thing I remember is waking up 6 hours later in a panic thinking I had missed a night of partying, luckily we had woke up just in time to go back to our hotel and got ready to go out.
By the end of the holiday we all needed a holiday to get over all of the partying we had done, we were all ill, had spent way too much money on alcohol, I had been sleeping in a room that smelled so bad we couldn’t tell we had a mouldy fruit in our room and I had lost 11 pounds in weight due to my excessive partying but it was worth it, we all had an awesome time.
