Hello everyone,
After a few very busy days I've found some time to write.

The flights weren't as bad as I expected. We had a good entertainment system onboard with Ethiad Airlines (movies, TV programmes, games) so the time went by a little quicker.

The total journey including waiting time between flights was 16 hours. We got to our B&B at 6am, had a couple of hours sleep then went for a walk round the town. We ended the day at the beach. Dinner was a Sri lankan dish of chicken, seafood and rice. Daniel ordered Nasi Goreng and they forgot to put the meat in it!? They did bring him some meat when he pointed that out to them 😊 Daniel tried the local drink Arrak which is an alcoholic drink made of coconut.

For the next day we had organised a two day trip with a driver. We drove up north into the ancient city of Anuradhapura which used to be the capital of Sri Lanka. There we saw the "world's oldest tree" (it was actually a branch held up by golden pillars), Buddha Statues, lots of temples and ancient sites. I love the Buddha statues. What I liked the most were the monkeys which we saw at a few of the sites, they are so cute but really cheeky. We fell into bed that day after dinner totally exhausted.

The next day we went to Sigiriya and climbed up a huge rock. It was very warm and we reached the top of the rock at midday but the views from there were amazing. Half way up the rock were ancient paintings and graffiti on the walls.
We then drove to Dambulla Cave temples which were fascinating. Some of the caves have wall paintings dating back to 1 BC.
There is a bit of hassle from street sellers but they aren't quite as persistent as the dear of Moroccans 😊
Off to the seaside town of Hikkaduwa today. We are going to try and get the train there which is extremely cheap. I hope they are not too late as warned in the Lonely planet - they can be half a day late in fact!

There is a lot more to write but I don't have time right now. Just sat outside having breakfast of eggs and toast.

Finally!
At last! I was beginning to think you'd been made into a Thai curry or something. It all sounds rather fabulous, I'm rather jealous. But not of a 16 hour journey!! Sounds like getting the national express coach to London. Looking forward to the next update, hopefully a bit sooner than a week!! ;) x

Fabulous photographs
Very good blogging Helen. and very brave of you to go snorkling. We have looked at all your pics, all wonderful and showing real scenes of the country, not just touristy things. I guess that you are exhausted after your sight seeing trips in such humid conditions. Got a text from David saying hi from Corsica. Sleep well, under the mosquito nets. Mum and John
