Day 5 - April 06 (636 km)
From Streaky Bay SA to Eucla WA
We are halfway over the Nullabor and have just entered WA country. We had to hand in all our vegies and fruit at the border. A lady went through all the back of the car and the caravan to ensure we had nothing hidden. 9 and ½ hours travelled today. We ate most of the fruit before we got there but not the salad so tonight needless to say we had sausages, steak and baked beans. Interesting!!! We found a Maisy on our travels check the photo out. Her name is Rosie and she is 7 years old. The kids were patting her all the time. We have to travel approx. 600 km’s tomorrow to our next stop otherwise we won’t make it to Kalgoorlie. Another big day. The sights on the Nullabor - Great Australian Bight are spectacular. The cliff faces are huge and I was very frightened of the kids near the edges. Gra went running after his Melbourne Grand Prix cap and nearly fell off the edge. It was so windy. We are paying approximately $1.36 per litre but at Nullabor in SA
Bunda Cliffs - Nullarbor
This is where Gra tried to chase his cap!! it was $1.72 (luckily we didn’t have to fill up). Stopped at Ceduna for morning tea and glad we didn’t stay here as not so nice. Meat very cheap though. Thanks everybody for your comments. Amelia - Kiera is still on the same DVD - Are we there yet? And no Greg, she amazingly hasn’t asked this question. Gra will find out a price so you can send the slab via express post. He has to keep up his supplies. Hi Sue - any mail for us? I cannot believe it we have internet access (wireless) but no mobile phone network.
Day 6 - 07 April (630 km)
From Eucla WA to Fraser Range
Today was another huge day for travelling. We experienced the longest straight road and it was very straight. We stopped at Cocklebiddy for lunch and the diesel prices were $1.67 (lucky we didn’t have to fill up). Gra went in to buy icecreams for the kids and he reckons that the girl behind the counter tried to pick him up. He was the only one at the roadhouse so she had not much choice. There is absolutely nothing here and not much traffic going our
direction and even for that matter not much the other way except road trains. Gra is getting used to waving to everybody as that’s what you do when you are traveling (only to caravans and travellers not trucks).
Balladonia diesel prices are $1.66(we still didn’t fill up luckily). There is only roadhouses on this stretch of the road (they call them towns). The powered sites are situated behind the roadhouse and are very average so we are glad we didn’t have to say at any of them. There is no vegies or fresh fruit to be seen so needless to say we had another boring dinner that night. We arrived at Fraser Range sheep station and it was beautiful. Duane jumped out of the car without any shoes and then we heard screams. Heaps of bindi’s in his feet. They were everywhere. His bike tyres had a million punctures in them. Unfortunately he had not much riding time. We walked through the shearing shed and collected some wool for his school assignment. This night the voltage was so low that we thought the microwave was broken. Beautiful spot, highly recommended and lovely people.
Day 7 - 08 April (315
km)
From Fraser Range to Kalgoorlie
Just a nice drive today. We arrived here at midday and visited the SuperPit. Duane was amazed at the size of it and the trucks looked so small in comparison to the pit. The tip trucks held 280 tonnes of ore. One scoop from the bulldozer was 60 tonne. Other than this we stocked up with supplies and Gra went to visit the famous historical brothels but didn’t seem to be opened. It seems that everything on the weekend closes. The caravan park is less than average so we are glad we are only staying the one night. We met up with a young family from Berwick and they have been here for one year working hard. The father explained that he was a fitter and turner and he was earning $70K more than in Victoria. It is a big buck town here.
