I am writing to you from the car. Things at glacier didn’t go as well as we had hoped.
Our first 6.5 miles of our hike were amazing. You will see pictures of that, and I still look happy. I was, I was happy the whole first half. I was happy when we were looking at the beautiful river and waterfalls. I was happy when were viewing the glaciers on the mountain top. I was happy when we were sitting at that glaciel lake. I was happy looking at all the different colors of wild flowers (purple daisies!). I was happy singing The Bills Shout song to alert the bears of our arrival. I was very happy until we took out our sandwiches and it started pouring. The temperatures dropped to about 40 degrees and the rain was freezing. I wasn’t happy when I realized my rain gear was not on our hike with us. I wasn’t happy when I realized my keens weren’t the optimal shoes to be trekking through a muddy trail in the pouring rain. I wasn’t happy that we had 6.5 miles to hike back. I am so sore today. I don’t think I
Yellowstone and Glacier 025
Fun suspension bridge on hike have ever hiked 6.5 miles of varying elevation in that amount of time. We were flying, and I was cold and wet.
I kept my warm car in my mind, I put one foot in front of the other. I tried not to complain because Justin knew how much it sucked. He had a rain coat, but he was still uncomfortable too. We got there with chattering teeth, and soaked clothes. Justin kept trying to say things on the hike to cheer me up. They worked. He told me we could leave Glacier, we could find the nearest town, stay at a hotel, and he would take me to see Eclipse. I love that boy.
When we got into the car, that is EXACTLY what we did. We literally threw everything into the car, without even packing it up, and drove to the nearest hotel. We found a movie theater and saw Eclipse. I was happy!
Here is the thing about glacier. We drove the Going to the Sun highway on the way out, so we saw the park. It was beautiful; soaring snow capped peaks, glaciated mountains, glaciel lakes galore, and beautiful forests. Unfortunately, a lot
of our view was obscured by cloud cover and rain. The weather there can change in an instant. We weren’t prepared for that. Temperatures were WELL below normal for that time of year, and with the mix of rain and wind, we just weren’t comfortable. This trip isn’t about toughing it out, if I’m not comfortable no view is going to compensate for the lack of comfort. I can camp, I can sleep outdoors, I can be comfortable camping. I can’t be comfortable camping when the wind is 40 mph, the temperatures are 40 degrees, and it is pouring. So long glacier, maybe I’ll come back when global warming has had its full impact and you are a bit warmer for me.
Hello Seattle! That is where we are headed now. Justin wanted to go, I have never been. So here we go! I’m going to eat fish or crab, or both! Woohoo!
