May 4th Off to the Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti
I woke up with the help of Wendy, I think I got three hours of sleep after a late night chatting with other travelers, so it was kinda rough. We were on the road by seven in the morning and the six of us, Wendy, Sabrina, Jasper, Nicio, Justin and I were jazzed about the safari and the next few days. Our driver’s name was Victor and he was a great guide. He was very knowledgeable and answered all our questions without a second thought, he knew it all. His assistant and chef for the trip was Dalu and would cook us some great meals.
The drive took a long time because of all the stops we made to take photos and enjoy the view. We first drove on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater and passed through the conservation park on our way to the Serengeti. The drive was incredible and my words can’t and don’t even begin explain to explain it. I’ll let the photos do the talking but it was amazing and even with how tired I was I couldn’t let the scenery pass me
by, I didn’t even want to blink!
Here is a video of us driving through the rainforest rim of the Ngorongoro Crater.
We passed Masai village after Masai village on the way into the Serengeti, and saw loads of wildlife. Zebras and gazelles littered the landscape and we were all in heaven. We even saw some lions after getting into the park but they never even so much as lifted their heads even though we were so close to them, less than a football field. As we arrived at the Serengeti gate so that Victor could pay our entrance fees, we saw our first group of elephants, (video
here) and it was great! They were so close to us, we felt like we could touch them. After 20 minutes at the gate and enjoying the view, we headed back into the park. We drove toward our campsite but took several detours as part of the safari and game drive. We saw everything imaginable, vultures, giraffes, zebras, gazelles, wildebeest, hippos, baboons, elephants, and even a leopard. Spotting a leopard is very difficult because they sit in the trees and blend in very well. The one we saw was only in
the tree a few minutes before it jumped down, so we didn’t get a lot of great shots of the feline.
Not long afterwards we headed to the campsite as the sun was going down. We set up our tents (which are so easy to do that a caveman can do it!). Soon after we were all setup we had dinner together. Dalu had made a cream of cucumber soup and some spaghetti bolognese that hit the spot for me (and everyone else, we were starving). I hadn’t been feeling good because of the sunburn and a heat rash, so the dinner hit the spot. It rained shortly afterwards and the Serengeti Six drank tea and coffee and talked about the animals we had seen, while we waited for the rain to stop. We went to sleep briefly after that and awaited our first full day on the Serengeti.
