A view of the promenade at Brighton from the beach looking back. Day 11 Today was a day for me to hop on a train and discover Brighton proper. A short train ride from Shoreham and I'm there. Too easy. Train travel in England is so easy and I use the website raileasy.co.uk to help me out with discounted fares where possible.
Brighton is noticeably different with colourful buildings and a hippy-ish look about it, especially in North Laine and the Lanes. A maze of streets and lanes with various stores, cafes and pubs. It's a Saturday and all the street vendors are out on the pavement too. It was quiet to start but soon filled up with weekenders exploring all the new and used wares.
At this point I'd like to mention the weather so far in England....let's just say it's everything in a day. Windy, sunny, rainy but not yet any snow except at the time of writing this blog (31st) there is a cold front coming from the north and there is snow oop north. In saying all that, I've been able to mostly ignore the lack of Brissie sunshine and enjoy myself
anyway.
I've made it through the Lanes unscathed and found the beach. Hmmmm! Interesting mix of brown stones and slate and other such stones about the size of a kiwi fruit. Ooooh I love the feel of stones between my toes. ha ha. The beach front buildings and arcades, independent stores and cafes provide the unique look of Brighton for a couple of miles in each direction. The old pier is just a collection of pylons now but the new pier is bright and inviting. I find the penny arcade games and soon get hooked on a simple game, using twopence coins to build up and push more twopence coins off the edge. There are lollipops on there too. My aim was the lollipop because I know that I'd never win my money back. Goodbye 5 quid. Mum would love these games. Before I knew it, it was 4 o'clock. Strewth! Too long. I walk back up through the Lanes again towards the station passing the Pavillion, which was a playboy mansion for some royalty years ago.
The people in this town vary in size, shape and lifestyle. The wealthy weekenders, families, backpackers (yours truly), and locals (weirdest
of them all). I spotted a fellow outside a pub dressed as Scooby Doo. I asked if that was his normal Saturday evening attire. No, of course not, you daft woman. I'm getting married! Stupid me. Was he marrying Daphne or Thelma or, after all those rumours, Shaggy?
I left Scooby to his scooby snacks and pint of ale and was soon on the train back to Shoreham. It was a beautiful time of day so I went to the Bridge Inn and sat on the terrace to watch the sunset. Ahhh lovely!
