New Years Eve, Kates 27th Birthday!!!

We were awoken at 9am by Deano, who was suppose to be staying in our other double bed but had a trouble getting the night guard to let him in when he arrived, who was ready to get the celebrations started. So after a quick shower we went to reception to be greeted by the rest of the guys and a rendition of Happy Birthday!! We toasted with some beers and sparkling wine and headed for breakfast. As it was Kates birthday it had been decided that she was in charge of the days events. We had heard that there was a water park on an island opposite Nan Trang beach called Vinper Land so we made our way there. Everyone was in great spirits and the taches from Christmas were still present for our surprise for Kate later on.

We got a cable car over to Vinperland and it turns out that there was a waterpark, thempark, sea life centre, amusement arcade and a 5-star hotel. The place was awesome. Like little kids we were really excited all day and ran round like it was the first water park we'd ever been

too. Some of the water rides were hilarious and we obviously tried to mess about and avoid the designated rules. Standard. We went on all the other theme park ride and the amusement arcade and had just enough time for a quick look at the sea life centre as it was getting dark and nearing beer o'clock. We all had a really good laugh all day and Kate really enjoyed it. She even went as far to say that even before the night had begun she'd had the best birthday ever. In the cable car on the way home we nearly spilled the beans on that nights secret theme to Kate but she missed the hints and we decided she could wait.

We knew she was wearing her new maxi dress which was ok as the props that Elaine and Sam had picked up in Hoi an could be added on our way out. So Kate was the last one to get ready and as she exited the lift we revealed the theme for the evening was Gangster and Molls!! The guys had shorts and ties on, the girls had feather boas and we all had trilby hats. The

guys had kept their handle bar taches from Christmas and we had shaped them to little 1950's style lip huggers!!

All round Nan Trang we were the only group crazy enough to dress up which got us a lot of attention but added to the fact that we were really making an effort to make this New Year one of the best. So the inevitable bar crawl started which included the 8,000VND beer place, the free Mojito bar (where we bumped into some guys we had met previosuly called Scott, George and Thom) and then Why Not! We arrived at Why Not at about 10.45pm and im certain that everybody made full use of the 1 hr 15 mins of dirt cheap double vodkas. At one stage i had 2 double vodka redbulls in one hand and another two in the other. I didnt know which one to drink first. The place was mayhem, we were the only group in there at first with a handful of people outside which meant we had immediate access to the bar and the dancefloor to ourselves. Then at 10.50 the obligatory rush to the bar to ensure we had enough drinks before

It is still Christmas after all
happy hour ended. After that there were dance circles, the worm, break dancing and overall carnage. The place had filled up by then and everyone else was getting involved. The security tried to calm things down but there was too many people and they just gave up. Lucky for them that it was New Years Eve and we were going to the Sailing Club or else we could of stayed all night.

The Sailing Club had set up a big stage on the beach and there were thousands of people there at what was a mini gig. We got there at 11.30ish and saw the New Year in together. The night after that becomes a misty memory of more beer, being on the beach, losing everybody, nearly getting into a fight, more walking round, more beer and then waking up the next day!! Im not sure how I got home but I woke up with a severe hangover, i mean severe. Thats what an hour of non-stop double vodkas (cheap paint stripper type vodka) will do to you.

For some insane reason Kate and I awoke at 11am and made our way to Louisianna brewhouse. Normal New Years

day mornings dont start till late afternoon but this one was obviously different as we were in Vietnam so 11am it was. Dan, Dean and Sam joined us at 1pm which is when the drinking started again. Dean raised the stakes by drinking a tray of the 6 different types of beer they sold and I knew at this sight that this day would be a good one. Mr Yallop joined the fun a few more more hours after that but from there on in it was downhill. Everybody was in good spirits, probably still drunk on the spirits from the night before, and the sun was shining. A great start to 2010.

As day turned to night the guys carried on the drinking at Red Apple whilst the girls rested then got ready. The night followed in similiar vain to the night before as we again frequented the free Mojito bar and this time made it to Why Not bar before 11pm. We met up with Scott, Thom and George and again were the only ones in Why Not. Obviously everyone else were doing the sensible thing and taking it easy but no so with us. The next

2 hours in Why Not was absolute CARNAGE. The double vodkas were doing their jobs and we were doing ours- making complete tits of ourselves. There were more dance circles, pile ons, wrestling, more breakdancing and more messing. The bouncer had now truely given up and left us to bring the place down. It was absolutely hilarious and the fact we had two Austrian guys (Thom & George) and an Ozzie (Scott) involved added to it. They didnt not what had hit them but were well up for the party. More vodkas were consumed and then we finally headed to the Sailing club for New Years Eve part 2. Albeit this was not meant to be as Sailing Club had other ideas and it was pretty empty. Needless to say we caused a few a bit more commotion (I had tried to rugby tackle Scott which his reply was that he would 'end me' if i did it again. he laughed straight after and then Itried to get him in a headlock) and decided that going back to Why Not bar would be a better option.

Whilst we were at the Sailing Club Barry suprised everyone and asked Elaine

to marry him on bended knee on a beach in Nan Trang, it was very romantic and im so happy for the both of them (although it would later turn out that it was the 2nd time he had asked her as he tried the night before but made a hash of it as when the right time came he said to Elaine 'Elaine, do you think I should ask you to marry me?' Turns out it wasnt what Elaine was expecting so he made the second time count the next evening). Ive been friends with both of them for a long time and I couldnt think of two people better suited. Congratulations to the both of them!!!

So after the excitement of Barry & Elaine's announcement we all headed back to the Why Not bar for another rounnd or two of double vodkas and more mayhem ensued. The party went on until the early hours of the morning and we all managed to make it to our own beds unscathed. Good times!!!

Bad times, Barry and Elaine waking Kate and I up obscenely early to go to the beach. They used the age old excuse of 'oh

I think ive pulled the 50's tache off
but we've just got engaged' to prise us from the sheets which made sure that I couldnt give Barry a slap round the head for darkening my doorstep at an unGodly hour. So after some minor grumbling from myself we were again at Louisianna brewhouse, drinking! This time though it was for a good cause (not that getting drunk isnt a good cause on its own) and we officially celebrated the newly engaged couple. As the rest of the guys joined us we enjoyed a few more beers on the beach and then topped it all off with some champagne. The pictures are amazing and they both look really happy. Unfortunately we had to leave the celebrations early as kate and I had booked to leave that evening. We had spent 4 awesome days in Nan Trang but we wanted to move onto to Mui Nai. The guys who arrived a day after us would meet us in Mui Nai a day later. So we prepared for the 8pm bus and said our goodbyes. We both thoroughly enjoyed Nan Trang and it will hold fond memories for us. At the moment Hanoi and Nan Trang have been probably the best

laughs we have had, which is probably due to the fact that we spent most of it on the razzle, but needless to say we had an amazing time there and were sad to leave. Although I think I would have to had to phone Tony Adams and be booked into his drying out clinic if I'h had any more nights at the Why Not!!!

The journey to Mui Nai was fine but we arrived 1.30am and we had to book into a crappy little hostel. the fact it was the most expensive we had stayed in so far and we were only sleeping there for 8 hours made it even worse. The following day we booked into a place called the Vietnam-Austria house that had been recommended by Karen & Mick. it was a lot nicer and was on a very nice part of the beach. In total we spent just 3 days i Mui Nai. Our time there was complete R&R. In my personal opinion we had been building up to New Years Eve ever since we landed in Thailand and we all knew that it was going to be a big one!! a big week or

so of drinking and debauchery. Once we had passed New Years (and then the 1st of Jan) there was a collective sigh of 'we've made it'. It was the first time in over two months that ive felt like ive needed a rest and needed a rest from drinking. My first day in Mui Nai I felt throughly run down and drained. I spent the majority of the day in bed and I didnt feel myself until the day after. I decided to stop drinking (and I lasted 6 days) and give myself and my sanity a break :-) (I know im being dramatic but this is a retrospective memoir and it always sounds worse ;-0)

The beach was really nice at Mui Nai and it was amazing to see so many kite and wind surfers there. On my first morning I walked onto the beach and looked across to see what I thought was a flock of birds, actually more than a flock it seemed like a whole forests worth of birds. When in fact it was these crazy dudes kite surfing for as far as the eye could see. It made for soe great pictures, especially at

sunset. being honest kate and I didnt move further than our sunloungers on our 6ft stretch of patio for the 3 days we where there. Although we did get our feet wet once when we tried our hands on the jetskis. 30mins of fun, but i must admit my jetski was that pwerful i did nearly poop myself once or twice. We met up with George and Thom from Nan Trang which was cool and the rest of the guys arrived on our 2nd day. Mui Nai was cool and stuff but there wasnt that much to do. Kate and I could of done some day trips but we decided to rest on the beach, so after 3 days we decided to move on further south to Ho Chi Min City (Saigon). We spent our last night in Mui Nai having a meal with the guys and saying our goodbyes. Our final goodbyes (before OZ) had become more frequent in the sense that we didnt know when, or if, we would see each other again as we were all at a stage where we were going to different places and spending different amounts of time. Kate and I had extended

our flights by a month and were due to meet Kates dad in Thailand on the 19th Jan so our schedule was pretty set now as it was the 12th and we still had Saigon and the whole of Cambodia. So with tears in our eyes we would wave goodbye to the gang not knowing that we would bump into the ugly feckers in the next few days :-) !!!!!
