Well...here we are then. Been having a really really lovely time so far.
Landed in Bangkok on saturday morning around 8:30, it was super hot and humid despite being so early. Got taxi into Dusit where our hostel was, around 10 mins from Khao San road. It was really really lovely - my friend Becs recommended it and did well, definately more hotel quality than hostel. At 1000bht a night though its quite expensive for backpacking budgets.
My friend Sam was staying on the Khao San Road so we tried to walk down there later but were given wrong directions which resulted in some aimless wandering but we found her in the end. She's been out here since Dec and so is an old pro and was filling us in on all of the scams etc. Didnt stay out too long as jetlagged but managed to make it till nightfall with a couple of red bulls.
Sunday, we met sam early and went on a really great bike tour. Theres a thai tour leader and you hire out push bikes to take you all round town, such a great way to see everything! We went down all the backstreets away from
the tourist areas and saw where there were shanty towns under the bridges and roads, went through some markets and got a boat to an island nearby called Bang Chau. Really, really enjoyed that, i'm not built to ride bikes though so felt quite sore after.
Next night we had to get the night train down to samui. After checking out of hostel we left our bags to get something to eat. We didnt count on the rush hour crazy bangkok traffic though, our cab wasnt moving at all and we had an hour to pick up bags and get to the station. In the end we abandoned the cab, i abandoned my flip flops and we had to run barefoot down the street to make it. Great fun!!
The night train was cool, its a sleeper train so there are bunks that they bring out at 9pm and you can just lay there for the 12 hours. Nearly missed our stop though, luckily Graham woke up on time really.
After 19 hours travelling from Bangkok to samui - train, bus, boat, bus - we arrive at our hotel yesterday. Its Grahams birthday today so as a birthday suprise ages ago
I booked us into a nice 5* hotel for two nights. The suprise was ruined though as the man in the boat was asking me loads of questions infront of graham and he guessed. Never mind. The Hotel is really lovely...amazing in fact. I would actually say we've been spoilt now and will struggle to stay in a hostel now! Really friendly staff, huge room, serious luxury. Good stuff.
Our friend Leon and his girlfriend are here in samui also, in the next door hotel in fact. So we had dinner with them last night and a few cocktails.
Tonight is Grahams birthday night, so I'm sure we will all go out for drinks.
Feels like we have done so much in a short space of time, just cant wait to see and do more.
xx
