Up early to catch out 11.30 flight. As it was international and going back into the US we got there early. Said our goodbyes to Gary and Carolyn and thanked them for looking after us for the past three days.
Got into the airport at about 9am and printed off our boarding passes which we checked in last night and then joined the line to get our tags for our bags. They dont take the bags there so we had to join another line to go to customs. What felt like hours later we were inside! Joined another line to get our passports stamped and the usual questions and then dropped off our bags. Then joined another massive line for the metal detector which did go for hours. It was 11.20 and we are like hmmmmmm our flight is about to leave but as there was massive queues they were delaying flights until people go through security. So we finally go the front and were put in another line in front of a detector. We were given the longest line so we waited for another half hour with people behind us passing us in other lines! Eventually it was our
go and you went through one by one. Once through they went through every pocket in your bag, every section of your wallet, opened everything and did a swap for drugs in your bag. They then asked you to put your hands in your pocket and then tested your hands for drugs. Once that was done for one person the next one was called through. ridicouls!!!!! We had no idea what was going on with our flight and people had walked back out saying that they had missed it and had to go and collect their bags and go back through the process all again! So we were thankful that we made our flight at 12.10 which was only hanging around to 12.15! So we were sitting in row 1 which wasnt that exciting as there would have only been 20 rows.
Before we knew it we were in Washington DC and out to the Metro. Paid $1.35 for 6 stops to our hotel. We booked our hotel late last night for $85. It is again the nicest hotel!!! Its massive with a kitchen and powder room and 2 massive queen beds. On the back of the door are
the rates for $399/night. This book the night before is working well for us getting expensive hotels for a really good price!!!
So we then headed out to find some of the sights. It wasnt that cold and we really didnt even need to bring our jackets. We walked a few blocks and stumbled across the whitehouse. I only knew it was it as there was a heap of people taking photos. I thought it was bigger. Then we walked down to the Washington Monument and then went up it to see the views. We then walked town to the Lincon memorial which was cool as I recognised it from movies. (we came home tonight and Forest Gump was on so we saw the bit he addresses everyone and then Jenny comes running across the water- just where we were!). Looked at a few other statues and memorial things for some of the wars and then headed home. We were not very excited about this whole washington thing- just lots of grassed areas with big momuments and statues at this stage.
We headed out for dinner at TGi Fridays and then home so Benn could watch the footy.
Tomorrow we will get on a hop on / hop off bus as we usually do and see more of the sights with a tour guide telling us about them. (we dont have much of an idea of what things are and how significant they are at this stage so the tour will be good!). We were orginally going to stay 3 nights but when I booked it, I only booked 2 and now we are glad as we think we will get it all done tomorrow!
