It rained a bit in the morning but fortunately our flight was on time. The early morning flight was cancelled ! There was a large group of first timers in our plane. A steel plant had sponsored a paid trip to Andamans for all its workers. They were visiting the islands in batches and hence next 7 days we kept on bumping into one batch or another. There was a huge applause, cheers and whistles as the flight took off ! The flight attendants had a tough time serving and managing the curious group. Two hours later, the plane landed at the beautiful Veer Savarkar International airport of Port Blair, surrounded by densely forested small hillocks. A smiling tour manager was present at the airport to receive us (some perks of organised tour). A quick lunch and we were off to the Havelock Islands on our ship named Bambooka. Its a beautiful 2 and a half hour journey riding the waves with the turquoise (I love this word and hence the abundant use!) sea stretching to the horizon and small "Lost" like islands sprinkled everywhere. Havelock is a beautiful island with 7 villages oddly named as No.1, No. 2 and so on. We took the Mahindra jeep with no doors for the Dolphin resort. This is a government managed resort located on the Vijaynagar beach. There are concrete huts independently housing double bed rooms. A few sea facing huts cost twice as the interior ones and have a sea-facing patio. But the winners are some basic AC/Non-AC huts managed by Dolphin located right on the Radhanagar beach.

We met Mallik, an ex-army guy with a broad grin on his face and several pegs of gin in his belly. He lost his hotel in Tsunami, re-build it and now doing quite well. We discussed the next day plans, ordered some hot pakodas and went to the beautiful beach. The sun had set behind the dark clouds and there was a eerie silence all over the resort. As I write this sitting in my room, It is raining quite heavily outside casting shadows on our tightly packed 7 day Andaman trip. The electricity has held on, although a candle and a matchbox in the corner suggests its just a matter of time before I have to use them. The constant tapping sound of the rain water drops hitting the asbestos sheets overhead, the frogs cloaking and the waves breaking at the nearby beach makes a nice orchestra. A small mouse and a lizard are playing hide and seek in the room. Not that it matters. Live and let live !
