Dec 27 - Dec 31 - Peru - Machu Picchu

Day 1 - We got picked up at around 4am by the tour group with sleepy eyes and still feeling some of the effects of Christmas drinks and food a little concerning for the upcoming requirements of this treck are supposed to be pretty intense.

We started with some breakfast at the start of the treck and then proceeded to gear up with our packs. We had a great group of 7 climbing together and we all seem to bond really well from the start.

The first day was expained to us as being the hardest due to the fact that we climb further than most groups to get through some of the massive steep sections so to make the 2nd day a little more bearable.

We made it to the most beautiful camp site with magnificant views of the andes valleys and snow capped mountains. Dinner was served in the eating tent and is absolutely amazing food. We all enjoyed some local coca tea and went to bed around 7.30 in prep for a 5.30am start.

Day 2 - We´re up not feeling too bad which was a great suprise. Started immediately the climb to Dead Woman´s Pass which was around 4800m. Rain, rain and more rain. It´s not looking as good as it could and some of the potential views we missed because of this made it a little dissappointing but we kept our spirits high and continued to march on. We saw various Inca ruins along the way and our guide was really informative explaining about the culture and history of the Inca´s. We made it to our camp site in great time and where blessed with some clearing of the skies, good food, great cards and a chance to dry our clothes.

Day 3 - We start again really early and made it to our last campsite and a chance to have a shower a well deserved cold beer. It was also a great chance to have a chat to other climbers and discuss all the awesome things we have seen.

Day 4 - We get up and leave at 4am - first group to the checkin gate. We are let through and are the first people into the Machu Picchu park and are going really fast to try to be the first to make it to the Sun Gates which overlook the whole of Machu Picchu. Some dude with a whole pack beats us there by about 100m, but all is forgotten when we get our first glimpse of why we went on the treck. Machu Picchu is breathtaking. Words don´t do it justice and the various emotions of us all swing from awestruck, admiration, fatigue and excitement. We descend into the village and experiance the wonder that is Machu Picchu.

Lets go home and try to party for new years at Cuzco - hahaha. Can I borrow some energy.
