It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas On The Ship . . .

A few weeks back, right around when American Thanksgiving passed and Christmas commercials started playing non-stop, Clair (my co-director) and I started talking about little things we could do to decorate our club for the holidays. We picked up a couple of small things like wrapping paper and bows in San Diego and we borrowed lots of craft supplies from the children’s playroom. Soon after that, we learned that the office was issuing a challenge to the camp programs on the different ships for the best holiday décor. And then we went nuts . . .

The true challenge was to MAKE all of the decorations. No problem! We made paper chains, cut snowflakes and did cut-outs of every holiday shape we could think of: candy canes, santa, frosty, gingerbread man, bells, trees . . .

We used our wrapping paper to wraps cupboard doors and put “presents” on the walls. I’d get the giggles as I wrote out “gift tags” with things like “To Jeanette, Merry Christmas, From Lady Gaga” and “To Bella, Forever, Edward”.

We cut out stockings and had the teens decorate their own stockings which we hung on one wall. In keeping with our clever gifts, I also scattered “celebrity” stockings amongst the teen ones. Beyonce, Kanye, Miley, Pink, even the Black Eyed Peas have stockings our club!

There’s a big fireplace that wraps around our DJ booth, with stockings for Mom, Dad and Carnival’s mascot, Freddy.

Another part of the challenge was to be diverse and celebrate not only Christmas, but also Hanukkah and Kwanzaa. One wall is decorated with scrolls listing the Seven Principles of Kwanzaa. Another has a large dreidel with a scroll saying “Dreidel Dreidel Dreidel” with music notes. And wrapping around the bar are scrolls wishing happiness for each of the holidays and beside the scrolls the traditional candles for each holiday: an Advent wreath, a Menora and a Kinara.

Soon after we started decorating the club, the rest of the holiday decorations around the ship started appearing. They look beautiful, but they’re not hand-made with love like ours!

Now that the club’s décor is complete, I’m very excited to share our work . . .
