hello once again-

Well I was getting a ride to the airport to go home and got in the car and put my seat belt on. I then started thinking a little bit about the seat belt. I then thought about past conversations I have had with my mom and dad about the history of the seat belt. Seat belts actually did not come into existence until around the 1960s I think which I think is so strange. With all the advancements in industrialization and especially the automobile, why did they not think of a seat belt? My parents were telling me that some kids were just laid on the backseat with no carseat or seat belt. I think that is crazy especially growing up in society today where seat belts are such a big thing. I wonder how many deaths occured because of no seat belts in the automobiles. I know that not alot of people knew about many health risks such as smoking and other drugs back in the early 1900s so maybe thinking that a car could also cause death was not even a thought. I just think that it is so weird and mind boggling that there were no seat belts until the 1960s. Well until next time!

Unsafe at Any Speed
Ralph Nader's book about car safety published in the early 1960s was probably the most important event that pushed the car indusry to provide seatbelts. Air bags came quite a bit later. Research in making vehicles used in the war in Iraq could lead to even safer cars if it is utilized in civilian cars.
