We started off the weekend on Friday morning taking the bus to the subway, subway to the border, crossed through immigrations then hopped on the Hong Kong MTR(metro/subway). We started our trip with taking the Star Ferry ride across Victoria Harbour, had lunch, then headed to Causeway Bay to get a hostel.
In the past we have stayed in Kowloon which is cheaper for hostels but also a crazy shady experience. After going to 3 hostels on Hong Kong Island in the Causeway Bay area we decided we could stay for 2 nights in Kowloon cheaper than one night on HK Island. We then walked around Victoria Park which was beautiful and was the home for the tennis stadium for the East Asian Games. We took the subway back over to Kowloon(is goes under the Victoria Harbor)
We went to about 7 or 8 hostels in Chungking Mansion before we found one we liked, didn't smell and was the price we wanted to pay 150 HKD=$19.35/night. It isn't anything I would have stayed in before this year but space is limited in Hong Kong . We rested for a little while then walked down to the Avenue of Stars
to see the Famous Light Show at 8pm. For dinner, we went to an Indian Restaurant and had great food, this is something we can't find in our neighborhood in Shenzhen. Then we headed to the Temple Street night market. It was on the list of Must Do Things in HK. Pete bought an awesome canvas painting, I bought a new shirt and we got our HK magnet(we collect them from each new country we go to)
The next morning we woke up and get breakfast at the Holiday Inn which has awesome an American Breakfast. Since we have been making omelets, pancakes and bacon at home it wasn't as big of a treat for the money we spent on it as before.
Then we met up with Jimmy, Cali, Kris, Kelly, Jordan and Tyler to go the the Men's Final Soccer Game which included the Bronze and Gold medal match. We got there early to pick up our tickets from will call and decided we had plenty of time before the game and we all needed a beer to celebrate Jimmy's 23rd birthday. Hong Kong is more like American prices and so we all are a little
sticker shocked when we buy anything here. We found a place that had 10 HKD=$1.29 beers. LOVE IT. See the pictures below.
After our beers we went into the stadium as our tickets were lower level, general admission. The 8 of us found seats in the front row. Then we were invited into the Hong Kong CRAZY fan section which was one section closer to midfield in the front row also. North Korea played South Korea for the Bronze medal and South Korea won. Hong Kong played Japan for the Gold medal and Hong Kong won. This was Pete and I's first experience at a soccer game and it was alot of fun. Each game ended regulation tied so they determined the winner with 5 penalty kicks for each team. In the Gold medal game they played 2 additional 15 minute periods then 5 penalty kicks since it was still tied 1-1.
After the game ended we walked around the Causeway Bay district, ate dinner at Outback Steakhouse, then searched for more Christmas decorations. We then took the subway back to Kowloon and bought some beer at 7-11 and drank in the street. It was quite crazy as
you can see the pictures below. I will just saw Pete had a horrible late night and really bad hangover. So bad we didn't do much on Sunday since he didn't feel well. MEN what will we do with them?
