Today was the big day to trek to Takstang Monastery, also called Tiger's nest, arguably the most famous monastery of Bhutan. But a Friday night out literally wasted out our plans. Paro is a small town with nothing much to do. So at 6.30 pm yesterday we were in our hotel room watching the movie Dostana. Watching a hindi movie on a gay couple with two other guys on a laptop was certainly not our idea of explore Bhutan trip. So we just shut it down and got out of our hotel to check out the 'night scene' of Paro. There are a lot of bars in Paro that boast of 'bar, live music and snooker'. Our first stop was a bar named Khamsaa. It was 7 pm and and bar was almost empty except for 4 girls, bar employees, traditionally dressed dancing on traditional Bhutanese music which is the kind of oriental music which we hear in Chinese or Thai restaurants. I dont know whether they were practicing or just dancing to an empty bar. Whatever it was, it wasnt fun. We took a couple of Druk 11000 and sat awkwardly on a couch for the exclusive dancing treat. We gulped down the beer and shot out. We headed to Dragon, which was just a cheaper version of Khamsaa. A couple of local chaps told us about Destiny club. Apparently it opens only at 10 pm and has a secret door which after several futile attempts still remained secret to us. So we got into Fusion bar, flashing posters of Bob Marley and Che Guvera and playing english music. There was a juke box in the corner but since we were the only ones in the bar, we got to be the DJs ! We had our dinner and some more Druks and played dartboard game. An hour later a couple showed up. Finally some customers ! But turned out they were there just to use the rest-room. At around 10.30, we were ready to go back. But one of us got quite drunk and insisted to stay back alone. After a small discussion, we agreed that he would stay an hour more and the other two would head to the hotel (a poor decision in retrospect). I should have cajoled him to come back with us and not leave him alone. But I just knew him for 6 days and generally you have to know the guy better that that to coax him when he is drunk and esp when he starts talking about individualism and stuff. So two of us headed back. This guy showed up in the room at 3.00 am, completely drunk, dirty clothes, with only one shoe, a bleeding hand and escorted by a couple. On his way back from the club, he was attacked by a mugger with a wrench. He somehow took hold of the wrench, landed a couple of blows on the mugger, escaped from the scene and reached a nearby house of a very kind couple. Imagine at 3 am, a guy with bloodshot eyes, completely drunk, bleeding and holding a wrench knocks at your door. I think he was extremely lucky to find that couple. I think we narrowly escaped something which could have turned very ugly. So be careful guys. Now I think I know what they mean by "Boredom kills" ! Obviously no one was in mood to trek up to Takstang. As I write this I am having some hot parathas and coffee at Hotel Pejorling, a nice restaurant for Indian cuisine, and the other two are still sleeping.
