Water lilies outside our accommodation
Water lilies outside our accommodation This is the hottest day we have had on the trip. They say it is unseasonal. We have had no rain so far, which has been really good.
We walked through the old town to go to the JEATH Museum (Japan, England, Australia/America, Thailand, Holland). The main street of the old town has banners up, the residents want to make it a walking street. They have put up signs in front of the old buildings recognising their Architectural or Historical importance. An old lady proudly told of the town history. The old town walls even stand today, and are in pretty good condition.
The Jeath Museum was ok, not great, and then we got a taxi to The Bridge Museum. Everyone thought it pretty funny seeing 6 of us on a motorcycle taxi. He stopped off at the war cemetery which was a bit confronting. Immaculately kept, but so many graves.
Christine: when our driver asked if we wanted to stop at the war cemetery i thought "great how boring" but i can honestly say it was one of the most emotional moments I've had on the trip so far. just so many graves,so many of them too
Our floating accommodation
Our floating accommodation young to have even been in a war let alone suffered the atrocities they suffered at the hands of the Japanese. You read about former prisoners returning here and wonder what all the fuss is about but i was in tears by the time we left. The inscriptions on the plaques and the shear amount of them was very moving. I have leaky eyes just writing this!
The Bridge Museum was good, and the kids wanted to do the Light and Sound show again. Our driver knew someone with cheap tickets, so we got them from him. We walked through the market, there was a lady making a red fishball curry, had to have some and it was excellent. She was also making Pad Krapow Moo (Stir Fried Chili and Basil, which looked good too.
Christine: they sell lots of dried wafer thin fruit and vegetables in bags and make fudge type stuff in huge wok's that they turn with paddles. The food is different in each region, even food with the same name and ingredients tasted different.
Our driver picked us up and took us to the Bridge. We were located next to a restaurant, not
Temple, Kanchanaburi
Temple, Kanchanaburi as good seats as the previous night, but quite ok. They seemed to have run out of some of the fireworks, but being the last night in true pyromaniac tradition, they managed to set fire to most of the props.
Our driver recommended a restaurant, and we had dinner and home.
Usual bedtime behavior may have to throw them overboard!!!!!!
