So after rushing back from Phoenix it was time for another project. Back to Wupatki for 3 days of pueblo stabilisation, supposedly.
Day one and after the short trip we found out the park guys didnt know we were coming and so we had no work for the short project. What followed was 3 days of visiting the sites around Wupatki and sunset crater. This was interesting, don't get me wrong but i was annoyed because i had been looking forward to working to restore the pueblos. Sites on the first day included the main Wupatki ruin and a large petroglyph site on the edge of the Navajo reservation. Then we headed back to camp early to set up camp and eat.
Day two and more pueblos, this time Wukoki and then off to visit Sunset Crater. Unfortunately there is no longer a trail to the crater but we did get to wander around the base and look at the lava flows. Onto another crater and although this one also had no trail to the summit, we were allowed to venture up anyway. The climb was steep and slippery but the view of the park from the top made
the struggle up worth it.
Day three and up early to pack away camp (after a whole 2 nights!) then to the maintenance yard to clean the cook set so things would be done ready for arriving back in Flagstaff that afternoon. Once this was done, off to see more ruins: Lukoki and the Citadel. All pretty much the same and after 3 days of doing not a lot, i was glad to be heading home. Usual van checks and cleaning then straight off to the supermarket for the $65 thanksgiving meal shop. During project we had decided to do a meal in the apartments for everyone off project ( 11 of us) and it was down to the 3 cooks, me included, to carry all the food home.
1pm on Thursday afternoon and time for me to start cooking. The 12 pound turkey needed 4 hours in the oven and of course needed to be prepared first.. Needless to say i had never done this before but everything worked out in the end. With the able assistance of 2 cooks preparing the potatoes and veg, the meal was ready by 6pm and we all got together for
roast turkey (named Clarabelle in case you were wondering), roast potatoes, carrots, broccoli, onions, gravy and stuffing. Followed by dessert of apple crumble, pumpkin pie or Crepes (French cooks, don't ask). For $6 each the meal was cheap and everyone really enjoyed the food and had a good time relaxing afterward.
A bit of black Friday sale shopping at the mall then off to Monument Valley on Saturday for a 1 day trip. The journey was long but the place was definitely worth visiting and on the way back we detoured to New Mexico, another state off the list!
Back to Wupatki Monday through Thursday for pueblo stabilisation. Hopefully they are ready for me this time! When i get back i only have one more full day in Flagstaff before the southwest city tour begins, can't wait!
