2-11-09 Well Kalbarri is beautiful, the wildflowers are amazing, we are on the tail end of them. There are over 800 species in the area, I must have photographed 50 of them, I would love to be here in July, August to see most of them. Den stopped so I could photograph a few of them & I was just in heaven, being a florist I was just in awe. We booked into the Top Tourist Caravan Park ($27 a night) opposite the main beach . We then washed, cleaned the van & went shopping, groceries very expensive, beans $17 a kilo & mushrooms $14 , considering at Carnarvon , just up the road they were $2 a kilo. We settled in & met up with a couple we had met at a few places, Alex & Jenny from Port Douglas QLD, they are travelling round OZ in a Motor Home & have a gorgeous 13 year old poodle called Tasha, which Jessie does get on with, the old protective thing again. We got talking & decided we would all go to the Pub for Melbourne cup tomorrow . We had tea & had an early night.
3-11-09 Melbourne Cup Day,
Den, Alex & Jenny & Tasha, walked down to the pub to get us a table & put some bets on. We decided to meet there at 10.30 & have a buffet lunch for $45 each. It was a great feed , with lobsters, prawns, salads, meats & sweets. As we are 3 hours behind the race was run at 12 noon so we did not have to wait long. We had a nice day, did not win anything, but had a nice lunch with good company. We waddled home & we all had a sleep for the avo & had an easy tea. We had offered to take Alex & Jenny to see the Kalbarri National Park Gorges in our car , so they could leave Tasha at the park , in the motor Home without having to put her in a kennel for the day. We all agreed to meet at 8.30am to set off for the day. It was about 33 deg today.
4-11-09 Set off for the Gorges, with a picnic lunch, the day was overcast but it was going to be 37 deg. Alex & Jenny like Wildflowers too so we stopped & got some
more photos & went on 31 km of rough dirt road & arrived at the Lookout, overlooking the Gorge. It was amazing, the spectacular views of the Gorge & only a little water in them. It would be great to see it when the Murchison River was flowing. We nearly got carried away by the flies, Den & I are going to buy face nets tomorrow. Alex & Jenny forgot theirs, nearly everyone was wearing one. We drove on to see The Loop, which was 8 km long & too hot to walk it, so we walked down to see Nature’s Window, a rock formation that you can see right through & a great place to have a photo taken. We then drove down to see the Z bend, another great view of the gorge. We were all very hot by this time & were glad to get into the air con on the car & were thanking our lucky stars it was overcast. We drove back out to the main highway & to go the 40 km’s to Hawks Head & Ross Graham Lookouts. Of course we had to stop again to get more photos of the wild flowers.
We were going to have a swim at Ross Graham Lookout but it was hard work to get down to the water hole & it did not look like much water in it, so then we went to Hawks Head , had a look & decided to have lunch, in the heat & fighting with the flies to see who got more to eat. We had a nice time & drove back to see if “The Girls” were all right. We decided to meet at 5pm for a drink at Alex & Jenny’s & then go to Finlay’s fresh Fish BBQ for tea. Sitting having our drinks, it started to rain & thunder & lightning, next thing we had the biggest clap of thunder, I jumped & spilt my wine & I nearly shat myself, the power went out , so it was back to gas fridges. We thought we would have to scrape Annie off the ceiling in the van, but she was over it by the time we got back. The bolt of lightning had blown out 2 transformers & had hit the roof of the Pub. We still went out for tea & what a great place,
I have not laughed so much in a long time. We ordered tea & Alex said we would take the two meals they had just cooked up, well the cook got on the mike & said “ No 47 come & get your bloody tucker before these Two Thieving Mongrels get their hands on it. We just cracked up. There was a discount for WW1 & WW2 Veterans & Alex tried to con him into a discount but that did not work, but they got a seniors deal. When their meal was called the cook said” No 67 The old bastard from WW2 & the China war” something to that effect. It was great, the atmosphere, the décor , the friendliness & even the dunny rolls for serviettes. We got home & it was still thundering & no power. Annie was not happy Jan & stressed nearly all night, we thought she was going to have a heart attack. But she got over it & we did not get much sleep.
