27-10-09 Up early & at the mechanics for the caravan rego inspection & it passed no probs, & $85 bucks later (wow). But over in WA cars , vans etc only need inspecting when sold so there are a lot of rust buckets running around. We were talking to the mechanic & mentioned we might stop at Gladstone beach & he warned us & said if there was a cloud in the sky or rain don’t go on the dirt road as we would get bogged. We headed off down the road got to the Gladstone Beach turnoff & the road had puddles on it from the rain so we pushed on to the Gladstone Lookout (426 in the camp book) what a view it was great. We left out mark on a concrete block there I wonder if it will be there when we return. We then went to the Wooramel Roadhouse & got gas ($1.02) & headed for Monkey Mia. We turned off & went into Hamelin Pool to have lunch & see the Stromatalites, The oldest, largest living fossil display in the world, There are only two places they grow. Also there is a shell quarry there, that
they cut bricks of shells out of the sand to repair heritage buildings in the area. We walked to the board walk over the Stromatalites & it was fascinating to read about them, I had never even heard of them, but they are billions of years old & take 30 years to grow 1 centimetre . We went back to the car park & had our lunch & then had a look at the old Telegraph Building & the shop as the Stromatalites were in the Caravan Park there. We saw a add on the door for a caretaker & shop keeper at the Caravan Park “apply inside” I said to Den “want to find out more” he said “no not ready to work yet”. I guess he is still having a good time like I am, & the money has not run out yet, so we will keep on going. I think we have spent more money on things like batteries & car expenses than anything else, we have managed food & living expenses as normal, probably cheaper than if you had a house, as you cant store that many spare groceries & only buy what you need. We
moved on & stopped in at Goulet Bluff , a free spot in the camp book, really nice but a bit hard to camp at with the size of our van. We moved onto Whalebone Bay 422 WA camp book & decided to camp there for the night. It was just great, we set up & walked down to the beach ( 50 metres) with a drink in hand & the dogs , it was magic. It was windy but about 25 deg , just nice. Den decided to throw in a line & went back to get the rods. No luck fishing but very relaxing. These camp spots are 24 hr only which is a shame because they are so nice. You need to ring up & get a free permit to camp there (there are 4 spots on the way to Denham that are free) or it is a $50 on the spot fine, but we had no phone reception to do that so we hoped for the best , that a ranger would not see us, There was only one other van that pulled in so it was very peaceful. We came back to the van &
got tea (no fish) & watched TV ( thanks to the dish) & had an early night, it was very windy. 325 km today
28-10-09 We woke up to the wind blowing & the sound of the waves pounding on the beach, what magic, who would be anywhere else. I dozed on & off till about 8.30 , we had breaky & then packed up & headed for Denham only 27 km away. We called into Fowlers Camp 423 which was nice (checking out the free spots we may stop at on the way back) could easily spend a night there. We then went to Eagles Bluff where there is a 100 mt boardwalk around the cliff that you can look out onto the water. It is so clear that you could see the sharks swimming around below (they don’t call it Shark Bay for nothing) there was probably 15 that we could see. We then went for a walk to see where you could camp on the bluff, it was just unreal, we will be spending a night there on the way back. It was very windy but refreshing. We pushed on into Denham & booked into the
Top Tourist Van park Denham Seaside Tourist Village $27 a night with discount. A very nice park on the waters edge, after setting up we went into town to the info centre to find out a few things & have a walk around. We wanted to book into the quad bike ride for the 30th but the guy was not there so we will do that tomorrow. We walked passed the pub & looked at each other & said “why not” no use spoiling our record now. We had a few drinks & ended up sitting & chatting with another couple that had been on the road 5 years, working their way around & we had a nice avo. Back to the van & did some washing, got tea & watched TV. We are going to Monkey Mia early tomorrow to see if we can feed the dolphins. Sorry a few more photos next page if you want to see them.
