The problem with not posting for so long is that you don't know where to start because so much happens in such a short space of time when you are traveling.
After leaving Adrian in KL on the 16th Oct. I flew into KK (Kota Kinabalu in Sabah, Borneo) a bit daunting for the first night but I woke up with a renewed optimism in the morning. Went out to one of the Islands for a spot of snorkelling not bad but it was the weekend so lots of picnickers oh well the speedboat ride out was fantastic though the driver was try to put the wind up the tourists I think.
Anyway caught the six hour bus ride to Sepilok where the Orangutang rehabilitation centre is, bit of a mission to organise travel here though, where are the touts and tuk tuk drivers when you need them? It's all expensive package tours unless you have plenty of time.
The town near Sepilok is Sandakan which has a very interesting Australian connection with the POWs.
Orangutans good then went on a 3 day jungle safari with Uncle Tans a bit aprehensive about doing the group thing but it turned out fantastic. There were 3 Danish guys, a Swedish couple, a Dutch couple and Canadian couple all half my age of course!!
It was very basic lodging indeed and they were going to put me in a hut by myself, no doors lots of critters, but the Dutch came to my rescue and offered to stay with me you could say I received a bit of Dutch courage!!
We went on boat trips along the Kinabatangan river, seeing Gibbons, Proboscus monkeys, lots of bird life a crocodile and more Orangutans (ho hum who says they're rare).
The food on the camp was some of the best I've had here, lots of fish, crabs, and vegetables and even banana fritters and pancakes!
At night we sat around drinking tiger beer and singing along to Swedish songs that the staff new.
By the end of the trip we were all best buddies, swapping email addresses and promising to catch up in our respective countries. When we got back the operations base (sounds impressive doesn't it) we were filthy after 3 days of no bathing in the stinking hot and humid jungle and then the Canadians and I hopped on a bus back to KK another six hours!!
So that's where I am now with a couple of hours to spare before I fly out to Kuching in Sarawak, I hope because I'm on stand-by.
I don't really have enough time to upload photos, hopefully next time.
