8-9-09 Off nice & early to Halls Creek, it’s hot & windy today . Lots of nice scenery to look at, the mountain outcrops of rocks are just great, then its back to flat scrubby country. There was a lot of road works going on & a lot of one lane bridges . We stopped at Turkey Creek for a drink, it was already 33 deg & it was only 10.am. We pushed on & we got to Halls Creek at lunch time, around 400 km’s today. We had lunch & decided to go out to Caroline Pool Free Spot to have a look, it was 13 km’s of dirt road & we thought the road would not be too bad as it was the way to the “Old Town of Halls Creek” & Chainman’s Wall. It started out a bit rough & we thought we would keep on going, then it got corrugated & we could not turn around. The road was awful & we were down to 5 kmph & the poor van was shaking so much we thought we would not have any doors or screws left in it. We got there & it was so hot &
red dust blowing everywhere, we decided to crawl back to Halls creek & book into the van park $26 a night. It would have been fine without the van & they should have a sign up to say caravans not recommended. We booked in & opened the door & the dust was everywhere ,as someone ( mainly me ) had left the vent open a little in the shower. There were quite a few thing on the floor, but all the screws & doors were still in place in the van. We spent the avo cleaning , not happy Jan, as it had all been done the day before. We could not hose off the car & van as the park had water restrictions & hardly any grass, just red dust. The girls had red feet from the dust. The park had a nice BBQ & pool area, but we decided to have happy hour at the van & cook a BBQ tea ourselves. While having a drink the biggest motor home , truck & car pulled in that we had seen up to date. Everyone just stared, huge, see photo. We had an early night as we want to
start early tomorrow for Fitzroy Crossing, awake again most of the night.
9-9-09 On the road again, only 280 km’s today. We had a good run, no road works & stopped for a cuppa at Ngumban Cliff lookout 100 km’s from Fitzroy Crossing which was funny as the scenery was a lot flatter today. We let the girls go for a walk off the lead, following Den (he had treats in his pocket) they eventually were good girls, amazing what they will do for a biscuit. We set off again & the rocky out crops were still keeping me interested & snapping photos, I am getting good at shots through the car windows, or I just stick the camera right out, shoot & hope for the best. Thank God for digital cameras. There was a bush fire as well, they do a lot of burning off up here to keep the bush fires under control & regenerate the bush, great idea I think NSW could learn from this. We arrived at Fitzroy Crossing Lodge & Van Park at 11am. It is a very nice park, with restaurant, BAR (yeah) , Pool & tennis court , $29 a night. Big
roomy shady sites & grass. Annie & Jessie got out of the car & had a good old roll in it. We set up & had lunch & Den set up the Satellite Dish & after some fiddling we had great TV reception. I had a sleep in the air con as feeling pretty tired & ordinary today . I think this no sleep is catching up with me. ( actually its 3am & I am writing this ). I awoke to Den having a chat with a guy , seated under the annex about cars & fuel economy, then when he went, we chatted to the couple beside us on a 3 month holiday, but doing the off road bit through the desserts etc. They have a great trailer, it is small & light & looks like a space age egg with a pointy nose, but the top folds out to a huge bed plus inside trailer you have a small kitchen, fridge & seating, quite comfy. We then fed the girls & headed for the bar for a drink or two & had a nice relaxing time. We came home & got tea & watched TV. It was
34 deg under the awning today, but there was a little breeze. We will do the touristy thing tomorrow, we are in relax mode for a few days as we cant get into Broome till Sunday, it wont hurt us a s we have been on the go & sight seeing nearly everyday.
10-9-09 Tried to sleep in , but hard here , the sun is up at 5am, we went to do our sight seeing, got gas 99.9 cents & petrol 159.9 cents then went to the Info Centre, the old Fitzroy Crossing low bridge , the Old Crossing Inn which was not open so will go back later. Saw the town which was not much to see , so came back to the van & I clipped Dens hair again & took the girls for a walk & a look around the park. We could not believe how low the Fitzroy River is now & the drop off at the bank & when the wet season comes the water comes up & over the bank onto the flood plains & into the Park. All the buildings are on stilts in the Caravan Park as the water comes
up pretty high. It is about 38 deg again today so we back to the van & watched the news & then a mid day movie & then went to Geikie Gorge to take a cruise. It was $25 & it went up the gorge on the river for an hour. Well another great cruise, the colour of the Gorge walls & the water was unreal. We saw lots of fresh water crocs & you can go canoeing on Geikie Gorge but there are time limits & areas that you cant be in when the cruises are on. There are a lot of crocs too, they look pretty placid but not sure on it. We came back to the van & talked to a few new neighbours & had a drink & got tea & watched TV, rang Brett & Kara to see how things were going. Brett pretty good, in a bit of pain, but managing well.
11-9-09 Den up early & he was determined to give the van a wash, while I washed & tidied up the van & did the vegies for a baked dinner later. We then went up & had a swim in the
Lodge Pool , cold but relaxing, we came back & had lunch & a rest & then we sat outside in the heat only 35deg under the awning, had a drink, while I did the blog & then we cooked a baked dinner , we rang Dad & Ivy to catch up with them, & talked to Lorraine & Ron & watched some TV & had an early night.
