Day 53 Vic Falls - Kasane; Botswana 29.7.09
Today we leave Zimbabwe and head to Botswana. Zimbabwe has been pretty much unanimously declared our favourite country of the trip so far with so many highlights we may end up coming back here. We left for the boarder at about 9am and took only an hour to get there. After a pretty easy boarder cross we headed towards Kasane and our next camp. First impressions of Botswana are positive the first thing you see at the boarder is a big anti corruption billboard and in an effort to fight the Aids epidemic they give out free condoms at every opportunity. At Kasane we were to visit Chobe National Park, famous for it’s many elephants. We were under the impression that this was included in the trip cost but it transpired that we had to pay additional to get transport into the park so we both decided against going. Instead relaxing in the park and watching videos of everyone’s gorge swing and bungee jumps.
Day 53 Kasane - Bush Camp 30.7.09
A quick stop in the town to buy supplies and check internet and then it was a full day
of driving to get to the next bush camp, nothing of real interest happened today other than the pain in my groin is starting to recede after fearing that I may have a hernia! Our dinner was the worst yet with the cook group (including neither Michelle or Myself) deciding to cook tomato soup and cheese sandwiches!
Day 54 Bush Camp - Maun 31.7.09
We arrived in Maun and took a quick look around the town, which like Vic Falls was very touristy after which we went to the camp site and set up our tents before deciding whether or not we’d be venturing into the Okavango Delta, Michelle decided she would go whilst I decided not to due to ever decreasing budget. It was a fairly boring day which saw me having to cook for the whole group, baked potatoes and beans was on the menu tonight!
Day 55 Okavango Delta 1.8.09
As I didn’t do the Okavango and spent the best part of 2 days sitting about in the campsite and mooching around the tourist town however from what Michelle told me it went as follows, ahem... We packed up our bits and drove
for an hour to our Mokoros (dug out canoes made from logs). All of the equipment had its own canoe and as mike didn't come so did I! I felt very unsafe as it was wobbling everywhere as we were floating through the reeds that were covered in spiderwebs! This was described to us as a relaxing experience but nothing was mentioned of the millions of midges you'd be covered in when you arrive at your destination and the tiny clearing we'd be camping in that also included a communal hole to use in emergencies! After a two hour wait we went with our guide for a walk in the delta and watched the sunset, which was very pretty. We then went back to the tiny camp for marshmallows and a spot of reading before getting an awful nights sleep.
Day 56 Okavango Delta 2.8.09
After the terrible nights sleep we went on a four and a half hour morning walk to watch the sunrise (which was even more beautiful than the sunset) and were even lucky enough to come across some at some of the delta wildlife
Michelle returned home early after deciding one night was
enough to spend in the delta whist I once again spent most of the day doing not much at all! Although I did buy a phone card and give the grandparents a call as well as home to wish Tom a happy 16th birthday.
Day 57 Maun 3.8.09
Today we spent most of the time venturing around the town and putting the next part of the blog and a few photos on at the internet café, as usual we were unable to stick the photos on. Later in the day the rest of the group came back from the Delta and a large buffet was arranged by the campsite. It was a feast, chicken, beef, potatoes, soup and lots and lots of cake! We decided tonight would be a good night to stuff our faces until our stomachs hurt!
Day 58 Maun - Bush Camp (Namibia) 4.8.09
Today we were heading to the Namibian boarder and our 9th country! This meant that we’d also being doing three bush camps in a row and not getting a shower! It was a very early leave and a long day driving however the Botswana / Namibia boarder was very
easy and we entertained ourselves by watching ‘Sex and the City the Movie’ which I feel was harshly overlooked at the Oscars, I’m sure they could have created a Mutton dress as lamb category? We arrived at the bush camp, ate chilli and birthday cake for a girl on the truck then went to bed for yet another early start!
