2/7/09 Off at 9am & on the road , stopped for a cuppa at Curtain Springs & then we
turned off onto Luritja Rd , the way to kings Canyon & pulled up at No 47 NT free spot &
liked it so much we decided to spend 2 nights there. The camp is shady & well off the Rd & fresh water. We let the girls have a run off there leads over the hill & they loved it. Den sent an hour collecting firewood & I tidied up & got tea ready. It was cool, so we started the fire at 4pm & sat around it & cooked tea & had an early night. We did 205 km’s today
3/7/09 Lazy day today, Freezing cold & a wind that would blow right through you. Den collected more firewood & “ have-a-chat” yes Dennis said hello to all the travellers coming & going , some we knew from other camps & some new ones. We cooked dinner in “ The Cobb Cooker” we had a nice tea , still a bit of practice needed with the temperature, & I cooked another damper ( Yummy ). While the generator was
on I cooked some bread so we were stocked up. A couple came & joined us at the fire for a while, then we played Rumi-cube & off to bed.
4/7/09 Off to Kings Canyon today so hit the road early as heard that accommodation was tight. Arrived at Kings Creek Station & booked in for two days to a powered site, it was so cold it felt like it was snowing somewhere . The park is lovely & it reminded us of the sites at Adel’s Grove, all in sections with your own BBQ area, they have done a lot of work here as it is a cattle property & they are doing the tourist thing as well, good on them. They have camel rides, quad bike rides as well as helicopter, so all are catered for. We set up & went for a drive to Kings Canyon 34 km‘s down the road & did the short walk 2.5 km’s. It is an amazing site & we saw all these people starting off on the 6km walk & going up the side of the mountain & across the top of the Canyon, we decided to tackle that one
tomorrow ( I honestly thought that I could not do it, I would sleep on it ) After the walk we went into Kings Canyon Resort to get fuel & - gas $1.18 & petrol $1.68, Den is running out of beer & we asked & the pub did not open till 3 pm so we headed back to our camp area & put the heater on. Den asked about beer at the shop it was $25 for a six pack of beer & you could only buy 6 beers at a time according to the NT law for Kings creek. We had a BBQ tea & read our books as no TV, phone or internet services here. We did 120 kms today.
5/7/09 Slept in & had bacon, eggs, tomatoes, sausages, spaghetti & mushrooms for breaky, hows that, very nice. We made the decision to give the 6km walk a try at the Canyon, so we packed banana’s, mars bars, power aide & water & off we went. It was cool & overcast this morning so not a bad day to do it although the colours in the rocks are better in the sunlight , never mind, the
walk is supposed to take 3.5 hours ( if I make it ). Well that 1st km was a killer, straight up & I don’t know how many steps but we went up 100 mt’s ( straight up ) The carp park looked like it was full of match box toys. We were puffing & poor Den had to hold my hand & pull me up in a few sections, my feet don’t bend too well & it was very steep & we had to rest a few times ( along with everyone else too ). Once on the top it was a long walk up & down & around craters & rock formations & we got really close to the rim of the canyon, there are no fences to protect you from falling, only a few bridges over crevices & going down the Canyon Gorge. It was just amazing & fantastic & so unreal that you could be walking that far up on the rim of the Canyon. I found some of the going a bit tough but it was worth it, we even went into the water pool at the gorge, the wooden steps are so narrow &
steep I thought I would not get to the top. But I did, then we had to climb back down, by this stage I asked Den if he bought his drill with him, He said “yes, its back at the van“, I said run home & get it, I need you to take the screws out of my feet so they bend better. He just laughed. We got to the 4 km mark then the 5km mark & I nearly kissed the sign that said 1km to car park. We celebrated & had our Mars Bar & water at that point & we headed for the car. This section was very steep & my knees were like jelly when I got to the bottom, God bless Den he helped me all the way, He was so proud of me for doing it & he so enjoyed the walk. I then nearly kissed the ground , it took 2 hrs & 50 mins. We headed for the loo & then we came back to camp & the girls were pleased to see us , they had been so good we bought them a ice cream. I had a rest, I did
not know what was not aching. Den went to buy his “Gold Beer’ & have-a-chat was gone for ages & caught up with people we had met. We had tea & sorted through photos , ( sorry probably too many ) , We are off tomorrow we have 3 free nights before we are booked into Alice for a week . We will be off air & no reception till Thursday.
