One of the great adventures of this trip with the group was getting to go on an excursion down to Morocco, Africa. We took our bus to the border of Spain, then a ferry to cross the Strait of Gibraltar into Africa. Then bus again to get through the border patrol. This was very interesting and seemed a bit chaotic. We all had to get off the bus and get checked to make sure we didn’t have Swine flu. No one did. ☺ There were cars being unloaded and checked out. People were all over the place going back and forth. When we got through the border we started making our way by bus to the city in Morocco. We stopped along the way to…. Ride some camels!!!

Once in Tetiuan our tour director Fran along with the local guide took us to through the old Medina. It was shocking to say the least. It was extremely crowded, had a distinct smell and there were lots of fruit stands, chickens hanging to sell, just Moroccans going about their daily life. We were so lucky to have the local guides show us around because there is no way we could have navigated through the maze of streets on our own... we would probably still be there now! We stopped for a visit at the Morrocan pharmacy which was not a typical pharmacy. Everything was a natural remedy from spices grown in Morocco. We got to smell their spices and try out different remedies. After that we were taken to a small restaurant and treated to some delicious Moroccan delicacies. First we had a vegetable soup that was so yummy. Then we had kous kous, which is like little round pasta nibblets with chicken, carrots, zuchinni and cabbage all cooked together. The picture of this will soon find it’s place in our kitchen! There was music, dancing and a festive atmosphere. We enjoyed it very much.

Spending time in Morocco was definitely an eye opening experience. We learned and experienced a little more about the Muslim culture. It seemed very safe and friendly, and it was neat to be a part of a typical North African city and see how they live, which is VERY different from us.
