Cusco's a beautiful city with many squares and many things to do. Machu Picchu is one of the attractions that mainly leaves out of here. I stayed for a few days to see the city then booked a four day trek that ends with MP. I would have loved to do the Inca trail but it costs more than twice the price than some of the alternatives. I ended up doing an Inka Jungle Trek that was pretty nice and we stayed near some cool little towns. We hit some great hot springs one night as well. However, when we arrived in Aguas Calientes, which is the town directly below MP, the excitement really started. A few of us from the group decided to climb a mountain which gave a great overlook to MP from across the river. The route up was pretty sketchy with some questionably built ladders scattered through out the climb. There we were able to get some good luck by offerring the three best coca leaves from my bag to the Inca Gods. Hope it worked. We went to bed early to wake up to catch the sunrise from above Machu Picchu.
We left at around
4:30 in the morning for the roughly hour hike up to MP. It wasn't much of a hike, it was pretty much just walking up huge rock stairs for awhile. We beat the first tourist bus up the mountain to ensure we'd be able to hike Waynapicchu which overlooks MP, since they only allow a few amount of people up everyday. Another 45 minutes on stairs and ladders, we arrived at the top and a breath taking view of sunrise over Machu Picchu. I stayed till almost sunset trying to see the entire place including a little siesta on one of the outer terraces. Great day!
