On the drive to our beach camp, we passed many resorts of beach huts or buildings that have all been deserted as the tourist industry has died in this area. In 2004, there was a bombing attack on the Israeli tourists, who were the main customers of the area. Since then, the Israelis haven't returned, so all of the buildings that were started to be built in the booming times have stopped mid production and the others have closed their doors, with many of thebeach huts falling into disrepair. Now days, Russians are the biggest customers staying in one of the big flash hotels along the water. Intrepid are the only customers of Sawa Camp, although the Shiek who owns the property has ideas to advertise to individuals as well.

After a couple of hours in the bus from Mt Sinai, we arrived at Sawa Camp on the Red Sea. We were allocated beach huts for the evening, before Dan and I went with a local company to go scuba diving.

At the office of the scuba diving business, we were each fitted out with a suit and flipper footwear and given a demonstration on hand signals and what we needed to do during the beginner dive. We jumped into the back of a 4WD and set off to the location of the coral, about 30 mins drive away.

It was a beginner dive, so we each walked into the water with a guide each, who directed us under the water and guided where we were to go to see the coral and fish. The were so many different types of fish, more in one spot than what I saw in the Bahamas in one spot. The coral was mostly dead, but every now and then a beautiful bit of coral appeared.

Back at the beach camp, we enjoyed lazing around on the mats and cushions drinking fresh juice cocktails. The food was healthy and very tasty. Our beach hut contained a double mattress that was covered with a mosquito net. The huts were built using palm leaves and Dan found out that they had to be rebuilt every 2 years due to wear and tear from the sandy breezes and sandstorms. It was a great relaxing place to hang out.
