buddha by the sea...
view back to surat thani pier from ferry to kho pha ngan... greetings brothers and sisters...
i departed bangkok on the night of the 22nd for a quick 11hr bus journey to a surat thani in the south of thailand... little did i know there would only be one bathroom stop on the way and that would be about 2hrs into the ride... i don't know how they do it, i nearly burst... obviously there was no bathroom on the bus... it was nice and cool however with the a-con blasting (i knew there was a reason i brought a hoodie to thailand ;-)...
on arrival in surat thani, at 0530hrs, i caught an overpriced songthaew (baby pick-up with 2 bench seats, litterally translates as 'two seats') to what i was told was going to be the bus station... turned out to be a tour guide in the middle of the city, from where i proceeded to book an overpriced bus and 'fast' boat to kho pha ngan... well the 'fast' boat turned out to be a car/person ferry which was lucky to move at about 5 knots... whatever, i got there safe and sound... the coast here is incredibly beautiful so there was lots to look at on
my bungalow...
you can't quite see it, it's behind another, but it's there... the 4hr boat trip...
kho pha ngan is cool... it's a fairly quiet little island considering all the tourism... there are a few cars, more songthaews, and an uncountable number of motorcycles and scooters... about a 20 minute songthaew trip from the boat dock and i am the main beach on the island, haad rin... got a nice little hut at the end of the beach a little up on the rocks, makes for a nice breeze... hung my hammock on my porch and am just chillin' out, getting used to the heat and humidity... there is no surf here however and i realize that when it comes to the ocean, i like a bit of action...
my second day on the island and i am eating normally again... had an amazing dish of rice with fried garlic and squid, less than $2cdn, i was very content... but let me tell you about what i had yesterday... thought something fairly plain, and not spicy would be good for me and i felt like something western... how about a sausage and cheese pizza... hehehe, check out the photo, you'll probably get it as quickly as i did
the sausage pizza...
just another reason to eat the local food wherever one is... when i saw it... if not, i'm gonna tell you about so if you want to look at the picture first, look now...
so, did you get it... the sausage is a weiner... it's a hot dog pizza ;-) it was actually quite good once i took the hot dog off... think i'll stick to the non-westernized food from now on ;-)
met a young man from myanmar, a waiter, who moved here a month ago for a job so he can send money back to his mother, father, and 8 brothers and sisters in rangoon... he's 21 and just took off his monks robes a few months ago...he is making about $180cdn/ month here in thailand, so much more than he could hope to make back home... and how do i feel... and so kind, he offered to lend me english buddhist books... his name is kyaw (pronounced cho)... and oddly enough as a waiter, the owner doesn't like them talking to the customers???
a brother from calgary who i met in bangkok thanks to a hook-up from my brother jeff (thanks jeff) is coming to the island today... i'm just headin' to
meet him and then we'll see where the adventure goes from there...
until now...
peace and love...
brother being...
