Family at Hofbrauhaus
Enjoying German beer. The brew house is famous for the large liters of beer. My parents had planned on coming to Germany to visit in March during my sister’s spring break since I left the US and the week finally came. My parents came in on a Friday morning and I had made plans on what we would be doing during the nine days they would be in Germany. My boss at my internship was nice and gave me the week with my parents off from work. As soon as my parents got into Germany we planned to drive to Munich for the weekend. I set up all the hotel plans and car rentals before they came so we just picked up the car from the airport. We started out drive to Munich from the Düsseldorf airport and found it took like 6 hours to get there. I guess my planning wasn’t really the best but I thought it would be a fun city to see. Of course the weather for driving was also terrible since it rained the entire time. After the long drive and thanks to the navigational system we made it to our hotel. We walked around the old city and then had dinner before heading back so my parents could go
Our car we rented.
My dad was so exicited we got to rent a Mercedes Benz. to bed. The next morning we headed to Dachau concentration camp. It is very interesting to see but also a very sober experience. After that we headed back into the old city to the Hofbräuhaus a famous beer hall in Munich. We had a very nice time taking in the culture of Munich. The brew house is very typical Bavarian and I thought it would be fun to show them the stereotypical German culture. The next morning we already had to leave Munich and head back to Remscheid. The drive was much easier than before but still very long. We dropped off the car at the airport after making a few wrong turns and headed to Remscheid on the train.
We finally got to Remscheid and spent a little time chatting with my host family before going to bed. The next morning we went with my host mother to the town of Münster. My host mom went to college there and wanted to show my family around. We went and saw all the churches and old city. It really is a pretty city and it was fun to see with my host mom. She then drove us out to
Dachau Concentration Camp
This was the main gate. Interesting to see. a beautiful castle that is now a type of boarding school. Of course pretty much the entire day it rained and no one in my family had an umbrella. The next day I brought my family for a short trip to Wuppertal and to show them my University. We came home early to have a nice dinner with my host family and all the kids. My parents loved playing with all the kids even though they couldn’t talk to them. It was funny to watch my family smile and nod to the things the kids would say to them.
The next morning we got up and looked around Remscheid before heading to our hotel in Cologne. I took them to my office in city hall and they met some of my co workers. Then we went up the tower of city hall and they got a bird’s eye view of Remscheid and Wuppertal. We got on a train to our hotel and my dad and sister saw the amazing Cologne cathedral for the first time. We got to Cologne and dropped off our stuff at the hotel before going to dinner in Alter Mark which is a very old
Die Frauenkirche
This is the famous church in Munich pretty area of the city of Cologne. We had dinner and enjoyed the Cathedral at night before heading back to the hotel. The next morning we headed to Bruhl which is between Cologne and Bonn. The town has a really pretty palace you can go on tours through. Since the weather wasn’t cooperating it was nice to have a tour inside. The palace is absolutely gorgeous. The palace was built by a king of Cologne to start and was even used for important state events during the time Bonn was the capital of West Germany. After the tour we headed back to Cologne to my favourite brewery for lunch and then a little shopping in along the main streets of the city. The next day the weather actually turned out to be nicer and so we spent a good part of the day just enjoying the views along the Rheine River and doing a little souvenir shopping.
The last full day my family was in Germany we spend back in Remscheid with my host family. We had another nice dinner and spent the evening talking and packing all my parents suitcases for the next day. My parents came with
Band at Hofbrauhaus
Very sterotypical German band. extra suitcase room so that they could start taking home things for me. I headed with my family the next morning to the airport before they had to leave. Of course there were issues with my sisters flight ticket and I had to get it all figured out with the woman at the ticket desk. Nothing like scaring my parents by saying things like “ohh no” and then a long German sentence to the ticket woman which my parents couldn’t understand. In the end all was figured out and I said good bye knowing the next time I would see them I would be coming home.
The week went by in a flash and saying goodbye is never easy. It was really fun to show my family what my life is like in Germany. They got to see my bus stop and where I work and went to school. Having them around made me realize how much I feel like I have grown this year and learned to figure out a entirely different world. Saying goodbye to my family also made me realize, even though I love Germany, how much I can’t wait to see home.
