Omg I love being in a city again!

First, the food adventures!

We got up at like 9am. And we had water and I had my square of chocolate that I couldn't eat last night.

..........

Edit. It is now Monday morning at 11am and I am a hun gover. Trying to recall yesterday's adventures.

Yesterday, Sunday, we:

Got up. Did laundry on the roof by hand, which is just so much cooler than doing laundry by hand in Moropoto on my tiny cement block. I love actual lavanderos with splashboards and RUNNING WATER! And everyone has a cage up higher on the roof where they hang their laundry. We'll take photos today... or tomorrow.

Afterwards, we got ready and went out to take the METRO! to Arielle's old neighborhood in the historical center. We went to her farmacia where I bought CREST TOOTHPASTE!! I hate Colgate and I have never found Crest in Nicaragua. And more deodorant because all I can find in the Nica is like baby's breath gross "Sure" and other such atrocities.

Post farmacy awesomeness, we made our way to buy postres. I got a fatty mess of a small bread product filled with meat. And then we took them to STARBUCKS!! CARAMEL FRAPACCINOS never tasted so good. I picked up a "coffe's of the world" Starbucks pamphlet and proceeded to tell Arielle about how coffee goes from the berry to the cup in our hand. Also, this Starbucks had coffee from Mexico and Guatemala and the "Latin America House Blend." Of course they had the African and Asian coffees, too. Coffee is so fascinating.

Then we went to the Zocalo, the big central square. With a HUGE Mexican flag. I mean the thing is massive and very disproportionately sized. I have no idea if I spelled that right, by the way. So we walked around the Zocalo for a while, admiring the Cathedral and the Presidental Palace and the Aztec dancers and all the Aztec vendors with their jewelry and feather headdresses and the medicine men and women.

We went in to the National Palace where the Pres lives and looked at all the murals by Diego Rivera depicting the Spaniard's takeover of Mexico and the slaughter of the Aztecs and others. I really wish I knew more about Aztec history.

After the Palace, we walked over to the Aztec dancers and while I filmed and Arielle dropped some pesos in the bucket and then got into a confrontation with one of the women who ended up grabbing her arm and pissing her off.... she decided to go get blessed by a medicine woman to clean off the bad juju from that dancer. So that was interesting.

Then we were looking over the ruins of Templo Mayor. So Mexico City is built directly on top of the Aztec empire's city and all of their temples. And apparently some electricians or something went down to fix something and found, well, the ruins of another temple. So they've been excavating it since 1978. It is pretty intense. I wish I knew more. I will provide photos and links when I get back to the Nica.

After all of this in the hot hot sun, we decided to go eat in a rooftop restaurant overlooking the Zocalo. Oh dear god, the food was amaaaazing. First we started with margaritas. Arielle got a raspberry margarita and I got maracuya, or passionfruit, my favorite fruit, margarita. Abeyta ordered tortilla soup, and I got mole poblano con pollo. Mole poblano is this awesome rich sauce with a combination of chilis and chocolate and a million other spices. I had this over shredded chicken with toasted sesame seeds and it was heaven in a clay pot. Mole poblano is so spicy and sweet at the same time and I was in a little piece of heaven on that terrace yesterday.

By the time we left this trendy place, it was like 4pm. Then we walked to Bellas Artes, Mexico's premier opera house.

I really need photos to properly convey the awesomeness of Mexico City.

After Bellas Artes we went to the park. And got a big ol glass of lemonade and some cucumbers with salt and lime and chili. And we sat. And rested. And watched people on a Sunday in the city. And bought suckers from a vendor. And then what did we do?.... oh, we walked past an Italian diner that looked like it was right out of the Godfather and went in to get a clay pot of fried cheese and tortillas and a couple of beers. God I love dark beer. Then friends called and we were invited to half price beers elsewhere in the city. So we went home and got our laundry off the roof and went out again. Good dark beer. Interesting convo. Ended up back at our apartment drinking tequila - them - and rum - me... and at 2am half left, half crashed here, and now it's 11:30 am and Arielle is still sleeping and I am hungry and am going to go eat my leftover pasta carbonera that Joey so obligingly brought over last night.

And now it's Monday. I wonder what food creations lay in store today....

OH! Annnnd I bought a red dress yesterday!
