My brother, Bob (Boberto) and his wife, Joyce, were here about a week or so ago for a WAY too SHORT visit but we packed as much in as possible and tried to provide for some down time too as they had been doing a lot of touring in AZ before getting here. So..........................here is their take on the trip to the Baja! Sorry it took me so long to get it up, but I wanted to get the picures aligned and I thought I had it all done and then I came back and the links were all broken! soooooooooo...................
This, verbatim, from Boberto y Joyce!
BAJA GUEST BLOG--First EVER!!(lol)******MARCH 5TH THROUGH MARCH 11, 2009
We arrived at the Baja (airport) on March 5th and were greeted by the Federales, along with Kath and Mike. We only had 50 people on our plane so going through customs was a breeze. W arrived mid-afternoon so we headed straight for Kath and Mike’s “home away from home".
We were so impressed! We had no idea of how plush they were living. They must have more retirement than we ever would have imagined. Their accommodations were great!
The trailer is very roomy and we adjusted to patio living immediately.
The view from the deck was awesome. It was only a short walk to the ocean, and the beach was beautiful and the ocean so blue/green.
The early morning sunrises were beautiful and Bob captured many as he and Kath kayaked several mornings and saw dolphins, manta rays and sea lions.
Our highlights were many and it’s hard to decide which was our favorite! You just have to experience the Baja yourselves.
Our favorite restaurant was “Kath and Mike’s” authentic Mexican cuisine, served under their new Palapa (see above). They sure are great cooks. We had fresh “catch of the day” fish and shrimp, Kath’s special Mexican Lasagna, plus desserts. Our second favorite was the stuffed potato restaurant, complete with the roaming cat (no dogs).
A patron at the restaurant told Joyce that if you didn’t feed the cat it would eat your toes! The food really was out of this world. Joyce’s potato was at least two potatoes prepared with cheese, butter etc., and topped with at least 25 fresh shrimp cooked to perfection. Cost
of the meal for four (4), plus beer….about $20.00
Our day on the road to nowhere was indescribable!!! Thank goodness Mike is such a great driver. The views were unbelievably beautiful with the Cliffs on one side and the ocean at various levels on the other.
However, it was a road like no other, as it was only big enough to accommodate one way of cars, was totally sand, no guardrails and when approaching a curve or switchback you had to lay on the horn in hopes no one was approaching from the opposite direction. Fortunately in the approximately two (2) hours on this road we met no one.
The way back, which was blacktop, and more scary than the previous one, as many washouts had occurred and had not been repaired since the hurricane 3 years ago. Having not been repaired in many places, only a small portion of road existed and you hoped... that when you were going on it... that another landslide wouldn't happen. We were grateful Kath could read the road signs preparing us for what was coming up. Upon our return after at least 5 hours of sightseeing and frightening roads,
Mike said NEVER AGAIN!!! We all agreed! However, we were really glad to see that part of the untouched Baja.
The one thing I had a hard time with was the practice of not putting toilet paper in the toilet. Now, what the hell is that all about! I mean, I understand why, but it just ain’t right and absolutely not a pretty sight.
Dogs are another little annoyance. They are all over, the park, beach, town, and even the welding shop! Right Mike? I had the good fortune of accompanying Mike to the town welding shop. Wish I had taken my camera, looked like a junk yard, old cars, trucks, parts of whatever strewn all over the place, and yes DOGS, lots and lots of DOGS. Mike had warned me not to be surprised if there were dogs. Well, there were dogs, not nice dogs either. As soon as I got out of the vehicle five dogs surrounded me and just hung around smelling my sandals and legs. I didn’t look at them for fear of retaliation, I mean these creatures definitely were inbred and had this crazy vicious look in their eyes. Most of them had
crossed bloodshot eyes with oozy stuff running out of the corner ! When I was walking back to the truck all five of them followed me barking and bumping up against my legs. Then, just as I was getting in the truck, one of them actually nipped my sandal! Mike was laughing the entire time, and as he backed out of the lot it sounded like these crazy animals were jumping up and bouncing off the side of the truck and banging around under the vehicle. I don’t think I will make that particular trip again with Mike. Thanks again Mike for the unique experience with the dogs from Deliverance!!
We took another day excursion to San Bartolo, and experienced the flavor of the town with it's church, cemetery and local candy store. The animals run loose as shown in the cemetery picture with the little burrow grazing. Cows and dogs are a regular occurrence, often being stopped on the road to let a herd of cattle cross.
Kath and Joyce enjoyed local shopping with Kath bartering for Joyce at every shop!
The housing and cars of the locals probably wouldn't meet most US standards,
but the people were happy, friendly, helpful and clean. The Baja was relaxing, fun, beautiful along with a bit of culture shock.
Would we go back???? As Sarah Palin would say "you betcha"...in a heartbeat!!
All in all we had a great time, loved the beer, all the personal attention, and hope we can make the trip again.

Once again I'm green with envy!!!!!
All except for the dogs.....now that was downright scary!
