Day 30 - New Zealand - Auckland

The flight to Auckland with carrier Lan Chile was probably one of the best flights we have ever been on. It was very comfortable despite Laura being ill and it did not seem like a 12 hour flight. When not asleep we were kept entertained by the state of the art entertainment system which including movies, games and music.

On arrival to Auckland we had about an hour to kill before the bus started operating into the city. Even though we missed Shrove Tuesday we managed to find pancakes at McDonalds in the airport.

We arrived at the hostel (City Lodge) for about 7am and found out that we needed to wait until 10am for our room to be ready, so we crashed for a couple of hours in the TV room. Once our room was available we had a good sleep to catch up on the time difference as we are now 13 hours greater than GMT.

In the afternoon we decided to visit the Sky Tower which is the most prominent building in the city. At just over a thousand feet this is the tallest building in the southern hemisphere and provided a good view of the city, which has a population of just over one million people. From the top of the tower you could also take a cable assisted jump off the side but we decided to just have a cup of coffee instead!

We spent the rest of the afternoon walking round the harbour and the shops until meeting up with Laura's distant cousin Kirsten. Kirsten took us to a Asian food court for a meal and then to a bar at the harbour for a drink where we talked about travelling as she has also travelled in South America. After managing to get out of a locked in car park Kirsten dropped us back at our hostel for a well earned sleep.
