AccessCollege is a small private school in Wimbledon offering English Language Courses, Foundation Degree courses and Graduate programmes.

I enjoyed myself very much teaching Ielts, Conversation and one-on-one classes there. My Ielts group was very keen on progressing rapidly and they all gave their best in class. I ran a multilingual group comprising students from Thailand, Mexico,Turkey,France, Nigeria, Brazil,Poland, Italy, etc a great bunch of young people with a very specific goal: to pass the Ielts examination successfully. Most of them are aiming to go into higher education in the Uk and in order to achieve their goal, they need to prove a high level of oral and written proficiency in English. This is part of the eligibility criteria they have to comply with in order to enrol on an undergraduate or postgraduate course.

Ielts is one of the internationally recognised Certificates of language proficiency, along with Toefl and Cambridge. They give students a head start over candidates who wish to apply for a course in an English-speaking country without holding a language qualification.

Teaching the course meant countless hours of planning and research and getting accustomed to a new teaching style. I loved the fact that I had to teach international students, they couldn't talk between them in their native language, as it happened sometimes in Turkey and Colombia. There was no way out and had to stick to English for the duration of the class (3h). The Conversation clubs were by far the most entertaining classes, as I have loads of experience in running speaking classes where the focus is laid on vocabulary and discussion. There are less grammatical rules and writing styles to explain and worry about, usually just a few questions popping up randomly. I was very sorry to leave my students and I am sure I am going to miss them.

Enjoy the pictures taken at the end of our class together, the fare-well drinks with two of my best students, Win (Thailand) and Rudy (Brazil) and Anya (Poland), one of the fellow teachers at Access College.
