Monday we travelled to La Paz about 70 Miles north of here to attend the Carnaval which is a long awaited event each year for residents of the city. It marks the celebration occurring right before the season of Lent which begins tomorrow. This year the celebration of dance, music, food and costume began the 19th and closes on the 24 of February. Eight residents from Costa Brava hit the road early yesterday and stayed in a colonial style hotel just about 3 blocks from the event site. Although the hotel was not a luxury hotel by US standards, it was comfortable, clean, quiet and quaint.

We learned that people here begin preparing for this fiesta months before the actual event. It was obvious when we saw the creations in the parades! Not only is there prize money awarded for the best entry, but the pride put into the floats, costumes and music is outstanding! Besides all of the floats, a large variety of music is offered too--from Spanish ballads to tropical music. Several of the floats featured these bands. And of course, most of the members of these bands and the float riders also imbibed on the sponsored drink of the festival--TECATE! One of the national beers of Mexico. There is a queen that presides over the events as well.

Food is abundant too! Food fare is set up on the main street and at the little stands, that stretch the length of the street, you can find almost every typical Mexican food. They serve shrimp, fish, grilled beefsteak tacos, all types of fresh bread, gorditas and a huge variety of candy and nuts. For the the children (and the adults too) there are the usual "carnie" games that suck you in and and take your money! It is also a great place for people watching!

We all enjoyed the afternoon and evening in a big way. We returned to our hotel well fed and very weary and spent a quiet night of rest. We got up on Tuesday, had breakfast and headed to...............where else? Walmart and Soriana's for more stocking up! I was able to get my ink cartridges for my printer so that was definitely a plus--AND about an $8 savings compared to home.

No misadventures to report...................Oh, as soon as we left on Monday, so did my gate workers...I think I am going to fire them.
