Day 28 - Santiago

The bus was new and comfortable and the journey smooth despite the fact that Laura was ill the entire journey, good job we had seats next to the toilet! We arrived into Santiago just before 2pm and jumped a taxi to take us to our hostel.

The Plaza De Armas Hostel is set right in the centre of the city in an old building that over looks the main square. We were very surprised to be shown to our room to find out that it was part of an apartment which we would have all to ourselves as the other room was unoccupied. After calling home we set out to find some food as we had not eaten properly for over 24 hours.

As it was Sunday the city had a chilled out feel to it although the streets were full with people shopping. We end up heading for McDonalds for some food and again it was nice to have some food that we recognised the taste of. It was enjoyable sitting high up on the roof terrace typing up our backlog of blogs while the sun set.

Day 29 - Santiago

Laura woke up still feeling a bit rough, she decided to stay in the hostel for most of the day . As I probably will not visit Santiago again I decided to spend a couple of hours checking out the sights of the city. First I visit a statue of the virgin Mary which is high on a hill overlooking Santiago. To get there I walk through town and then catch the Venicular (tram) up to the top. I then do a quick lap of the city taking snaps of the usual state buildings and monuments along the way before returning to base to see how Laura is. We both go for a short walk round the shops as Santiago is a shopping Mecca

We are currently in the airport about to board the flight to Auckland New Zealand. Here is a quick reflection on South America.

Every country we have visited is so varied. Peru is hectic with so much to see. Bolivia is in need of some serious work but the people could not be more helpful. Chile is just like any European country. So much to see and yet so little time. I see South America as unfinished business and would certainly like to return to see Brazil and Argentina.

New Zealand here we come.
