I just want to note that driving in Rome definitely beats out New York City on its level of chaos. The motorcycles weave in and out of cars, and cars drive up along the side of the motorcycles. They are not treated as a vehicle really. It is also interesting to see the broad span of people that drive them: men in suits, women dressed in business clothes, older women, every type of person imaginable. While taking the bus to class, we almost hit a car because it swerved from the opposite lane into my bus’s lane to back up into a parking spot. The bus driver slammed on its breaks (tripping up all the people standing) and stopped face to face with this car. I have no idea what people are thinking.

Italians drive how people in America wish they could drive… the moment someone goes to slow for them, they honk; if they don’t want to drive behind someone, the just pass them; there are no lanes in the roads since they wouldn’t stay in them anyway; motorcycles weave in and out of cars and the people driving cars, drive alongside the motorcycles cause I guess they don’t see them as a real vehicle… The speed limit just varies on the size of the car you have, so on the same street, motorcycles can drive faster than cars, etc.

And walking across the street is also very stressful. The Italians though just go and expect the cars to stop. If I make it through this semester without getting hit by a car (or motorcycle), it will be a miracle!

Also, some Romans are rude. They always try to cut in line, never say scusi if they bump into you while walking, and expect you to move out of there way… guess I’m not accustomed to living in a big city.
