I'm me

I'm home now. I haven't decided what will come next.
I may return to ships.
I may return to Honduras.
I may find work here.
There's been lots of pressure from people lately to just settle down in Canada and start my teaching career here. It got me thinking.
Here's what I came up with:

I’m me

I’m an artist.
Nothing is black and white.
With creativity and imagination,
we have the ability to paint the world as we wish to see it.
Everything is perspective.

I’m a traveler.
Sitting alone, watching the sunset atop a Mayan temple,
enclosed by the calls of exotic birds and monkeys in the surrounding jungle -
I found myself.
I long to discover the world, and meet the people whose lives have been lived parallel to my own, yet are different in so many ways.
In finding others, I find myself.

I’m an explorer.
Life isn’t lived by sitting and waiting for it to happen.
While some are content living mundanely,
I revel in days that bring me somewhere different than the last.

I’m an adventurer.
I believe that our lives go only as far as the experiences we create.
You won’t find the sunken treasure while wading on the shore.
I enjoy getting wet.

I’m a teacher.
I teach “first position” as “pizza slice” to a 5 year old ballerina.
I teach a Spanish child why we don’t say, “Can you borrow me a pencil?”
I teach a young girl how to sing to the people in the back row.
I teach a 60 year old man how to use Word and Excel.
No matter the job or where I am,
I am a teacher.
I try to inspire those I teach to be better individuals.
A student once told me, “Teachers are the best thing God do.”
I smiled.
I aspire to be like the teachers who inspired me.
I learn from my students while they learn from me.

I’m a student.
It goes beyond the school and degrees.
I worked hard to get the education that I have,
But life is more than thousand dollar pieces of paper that get us fancy jobs.
Every day is full of life’s lessons that we must use to build character.
Living is learning.
No learning is wasted.

I’m an optimist.
Difficult situations and struggles are God’s way of building us to be stronger individuals.
Finding the strength to pull ourselves out of the rut we are put in provides us with the knowledge that we possess the strength to do it again when necessary.

I’m an individual.
I am not afraid to be alone.
While others tell me what is “right” or how I “should” be living my life,
I chose the path that I believe will help me to learn more about myself.
I don’t need a stable Monday to Friday job to feel successful.
I will settle down when I feel ready.
I will not settle for anything less than I dream.

I’m a dreamer.
Without goals, we are left with nothing to aim for.
I strive every day to be a better person and in doing so, wish to better the lives of those around me.
Dreams become reality.
Without dreams, how can we accomplish great things?

I’m a friend.
I’ve been a shoulder to cry on and a listening ear.
I’m told I posses a motherly intuition that makes me worry and try to protect the people I care about.
I can’t help it.
Having a friend means being one.
I’m grateful for the love and support I’ve had from many of mine.

I’m a giver.
Despite debts I may have, I have access to things that others only dream of.
If there are pennies to be spared, pennies can be shared.
I never realized fluffy pillows, drinking water, or flushing toilet paper were blessings
Until I was without
I’ve walked hand in hand with a little girl who calls me an angel because my measly monthly payments have made a huge difference in her life.
Bringing happiness to others brings happiness to me.

I’m a free spirit.
I like to sing in the shower, knit while I watch old movies, and swing on a playground.
I love sand between my toes and the way summer grass feels with bare feet.
I dance to express emotion I cannot relate in words.
I wish the world could retain the innocence that every child once possesses.
I like puddles, bubble baths, and hugs that last more than 5 seconds.
There’s magic in campfires, sunny days, and warm clothes straight from the dryer.
I appreciate the smaller things in life.

I’m a romantic.
Homemade cards mean more than Hallmark.
More can be said in a silent moment together than in a thousand words.
“Movie moments” exist.
I never imagined I would find love where I found it…
Yet now that I’ve found it, it’s hard to imagine my life without it -
Without him.
I believe a fairytale ending is possible for anyone who believes it can happen, and is willing to work for it.

I’m a believer.
I believe that there is a time and reason for everything.
If it’s meant to happen it will happen.
I have to believe it’s true.
With God’s will and strength, I believe anything in life is possible.
In the end, my life is the one that I make it.

You’re you.

I’m me.

BLESSED TO BE THE ME YOU ARE
You're a spirited individual, Sarah. And, although we'll always have our differences, I relish in the sameness we share. Your mom and I are very proud of you. As you know, you'll have our love and support always. You are, indeed, blessed to be the me you are. Love always, DAD
