On January 5th and 6th we visited Uruapan, a town 2h away from Morelia. On the first day, we visited a national park, which had trails following the Rio Cardenas through lush forest. It was quite touristy. At the top of one of the trails was the ´Devil´s Knee´. The story behind this spot is that the devil used to live in a cave at the head of the river, stopping the water from getting through. The people who lived nearby called a priest, who came and blessed the rock. The devil then jumped up from the rock, stumbled, and fell, leaving an imprint of his knee in the rock. Today, this little knee print is marked by a white arrow painted on the rock (and the water flows freely through).

In the evening, young people come out into the street to socialize. At the house where we were staying, Elba´s friends, and her cousin´s friends, came to talk with us in a big group, standing on the sidewalk and street for several hours. All down the street we could see similar groups of people standing hanging out on street corners. It is unclear whether this is an everyday thing, or whether it is something that happens only on Sunday due to there only being one bar open.

The next day we hiked up a mountain that is partially covered by the town. The paved street we were on turned to a dirt track with chickens and dogs, then a path in the forest, then just forest which we pushed our way through, following Elba´s cousin. It was similar to forests in Canada, except for the palm trees and lack of mosquitos.

I'm very jealous of you two ladies - it's freezing here right now, too cold really to go outside.
