Tuesday, January 27th, 2009 So we're off on our big adventure! Sold almost everything, put on our backpacks and there we go! But...
They won't let us fly because we don't have an itinirary they approve off, explains the less than friendly clerk. Eventually a senior officer okays our leaving and we depart JHB at 14:10, flying Emirates to Dubai. On the flight the old Thai man behind Ferdi has a fit when Ferdi reclines his seat. Later he proceeds to smoke in the toilet and there's a huge ruckus with threats of arrest and security and stuff. We're off to a great start.
Wednesday, January 28th, 2009 We arrived in Dubai at 12:15. The airport was busier at midnight than OR Thambo at it's busiest. We bought Belgian chocolate, Scottish shortbread, sleeping pills, water & gum, then waited for our connecting flight to Bangkok at 03:15. We were exhuasted. Our flight left 30mins late. It's almost 6 hours to Bangkok and we arrive at 12:30 to a massive queue at Immigration. After 2hrs in the queue we eventually found our transfer to Bansabai Hostel. A few detours and stops for directions later we found the place. What a
VERY pleasantly surprise! Nice rooms with aircon and a gorgeous pool and bar area on the roof! Spectacular! We enjoyed our first "Singha" beer looking over Bangkok's skyline. We both feel strangely at home here. There's a peacefulness within us. We are LOVING it! We had delicious fried noodles for dinner. The portions are much smaller than in SA, but we agreed that that's a good thing! After such a loooong day we went to bed before 8pm.
Thursday, January 29th, 2009 We slept very late, had breakfast, and then grabbed a taxi to Bang Po pier where we caught a river taxi to Ta Chang pier, and from there we went to the Grand Palace. In order to go in we had to borrow long sleeved clothing since our legs and shoulders were showing. They do have shirts, pants & sarrongs that you can borrow, but you need to leave a deposit and we didn't have change so we had to leave. We walked down the street to Wat Pho. We had no idea what it was all about until Talita read in our guidebook that it's the resting place of the huge 46m long and 15m
high golden reclining Buddha. We got some change and went back to the Grand Palace. With an extra layer of clothing in the tropical heat we started to struggle a little. In one of the rooms we saw the 14th century Emerald Buddha. The place is covered with gold and exquisite mother of pearl inlays. Beautifully sculpted trees abound. We got tired pretty quick, since we had skipped lunch, so we headed back to the pier. The taxi took a big detour to get us back to the hostal. Here we chilled by the pool for the evening. (Spent about 1500 baht or R430)
