We have now left Darjeeling and took a overnight train to Calcutta.

We havn't been that lucky in india, on wednesday at the hotel near darjeeling katie got really ill, i don't think it was food poisining as we have eaten the same things and i was fine, but katie did brush her teeth with the tap water twice.

Anyway she couldn't keep anything down she would have 2 sips of water and then be sick straight away, the hotel called a doctor, who said he needed to put her on a drip. He came back an hour later and said he had changed his mind and would just give her 3 injections instead and see how she felt after an hour. He came with the stuff to inject katie with but we had to supply our needles, gloves and antiseptic wipes, he really didn't seem that confident about giving the injections. He managed to get them in roughly the right places, although when he put the second one in, katie let out a yelp and siad " that really hurt" he then turned to me and said "oh poor thing she is confused these injections don't hurt" katie didn't look impressed and replied " i'm not confused that really hurt"

Anyway after about an hour katie felt much better and hadn't been sick and managed to keep water down. The next morning she even had some pancakes and honey.

On Thursday evening we caught the 10 hour train ride to calcutta. We were blissfully unaware and thought we were in 1st class, although when we looked at our ticket it said 3AC, which meant we were in 3rd class air conditioning. We weren't too happy! Anyway we went aboard and realised that 3rd class meant you have 3 tiers of sleeping beds, i was in the middle and katie was at the top, with 6 others in our cubby hole. the actual carriage was continous beds but with little partions every so often. Anyway it was horrible, there were cockroaches everywhere, and all the people took there shoes off and there was this stench of cheesy feet that just lingered around. Also there were about 3 men in our cubby hole who just continuously stared at katie on the top bunk they really aren't subtle about it. She was worried the whole night that some one was going to lean across and touch her. we both just stuck our headphones in and drifted off to sleep every so often craddling our day bags, as people had told us that quite alot of bags got pinched on the way to calcutta.

After all our complaining we spoke to some other people who said they travelled 3rd class no AC and said it was alright, we are obviously not very good backpackers.

Once we arrived in Calcutta we stayed at katie's granparents friends house who are really nice. we have eaten 3 full meals every day for the first time since we left england. flying to shanghai on monday evening and are quite pleased to be leaving india.

speak soon,

katie and lucy xxxx

Imodium
Sorry about the Delhi Belly. I hope you have some Imodium (loperamide) in your travel pack for emergencies such as these; if not, get some in Calcutta. It might be wise always to ask physicians what they are prescribing for you, and to keep a note of it. Hope life improves for you both in Calcutta. All the best, Ken
