La Paz

La Paz La Paz what to say about La Paz. Well its the highest city in the world at 3,700m and built in a canyon so walking anywhere is lot of effort due to the incline and the lack of oxygen at that altitude! The first few days in La Paz were just spent aclimatizing and partying (somewhat contradictory) waiting for James girlfriend Kate to arrive before we headed south for the main event the Salar De Uyuni.

Uyuni

After a 12 hour night bus from La Paz (on mostly unpaved dirt roads which makes for some interesting sleeping!) we arrived in the small village of Uyuni situated on the edge of the Salar de Uyuni to do a three day tour. The Salar is one massive expanse of Salt, an old lake that dried up millions of year ago.

Day One
After some breakfast and a sit down on some solid ground after the shaky night bus we met our 4x4 vehicle and our 19 year old driver/guide Alberto and set off! Photos best explain what went on so ill just give a summary, Started at train grave yard headed across the salar stopped in the middle for funny pictures and Icahuasi island then over to far side of the Salar to stay in a salt hotel for the night.

Day Two
Up at crack of dawn into the truck and headed south all day! Saw a few things along the way though, loadsa Falmingoes couple of lagoons, interesting rock formations and amazing landscapes bit of a geography field trip really!

Day Three
Up before the crack of dawn at 5am! Saw some geysers(geothermal) in the sun rise! Went to some natural hot springs at about 6am which were lovely warm and refreshing till you get out and its so cold your hair starts to freeze! After that we went down to a national park on the border with Argentina Bolivia and Chile to see Laguna Verde before the long drive back to Uyuni and then the 12 hour bus back to La Paz
